  • Worked in the Rochdale office then became home based as a Control Manager for JSD Rail; taking phone calls from staff i.e. Maintainers, Operators and Drivers when they book on and off shift, report faults with machinery and any other incidents that may occur.
  • Update the Control Log with all relevant information throughout the day.
  • Authorise safe movement on the railways and within yards for reasons such as maintenance or fuel and water replenishments.
  • Submit orders for fuel and water and arrange deliveries. Also arrange the hire and off hire of equipment for sites e.g. welfare cabins, generators.
  • Liaise with outside agencies with regards to any faults with vehicles or machinery and give updates where necessary.
  • Draft the 2 week Roster on a weekly basis to ensure staff know well in advance when and where they are working.
  • Send out completed Weed Spray Task Lists and Track Treatment Ticksheets to all relevant agencies in due course to inform them whether all sites have been treated or if anything has to be recovered.
  • Liaise with companies to ensure Drivers and Operators are allocated where necessary for circuits, in case any alternative plans need to be made.
  • Promoted to Senior Control Manager after 19 months with JSD Rail.
  • Complete fatigue registers for safety critical staff to monitor their hours, rests and breaks.
  • Create and update the Roster for all Control Managers and the on-call Engineers.
  • Manage, monitor and authorise leave for all Control Managers.
  • Took on the role of Duty Manager, due to changes within the Company; then promoted to Senior Duty Manager when the workload increased again. This is a similar role to Senior Control Manager.
  • Assist the Engineering Team, checking Maintenance paperwork from our Engineers.

  • Worked in the Movement Control Centre (MCC), which is a very demanding office providing logistics support to all Military establishments in Germany and the UK.
  • Routinely applied for Transit Clearance through France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg (the Low Countries) for all Military road moves.
  • Provided advice to companies on Dangerous Goods (DG), Out of Gauge (OOG) vehicles, convoys and the movement of weapons throughout EU countries.
  • Issued Road Movement Orders (RMOs) to organisations for Military road moves through France and the Low Countries (LC). The production and distribution involved close liaison with external organisations.
  • Tasked movements sections in the correct Area of Responsibility (AOR) to issue Customs paperwork for weapons, freight and other restricted goods.
  • Tasked movements sections in the relevant AOR to meet Host Nations police escorts and the company drivers at Border Crossing Points (BXPs) on designated routes.
  • Worked in the Bielefeld Travel Centre (BTC) booking ferry crossings and Eurotunnels and hire cars for Military establishments within Germany.
  • Worked as the Guard 2ic (second in command) for the security of the camp. Made sure the guard rota was fair and followed strictly. Reported any incidents i.e. suspicious behaviour and vandalism to the Royal Military Police.

  • Carried out Duty Movement Controller duties; mainly dealt with compassionate cases and ensured the passenger/s got their flight and onward move details. In extreme cases specific (Spec) aircraft had to be diverted to Dusseldorf International Airport. This was controlled from start to finish and the passenger/s got away as quickly and safely as possible.
  • Gained access to high security areas of Dusseldorf International Airport when escorting ‘Medevac’ or ‘Aeromed’ passengers to their aircraft.
  • Met Host Nation police escorts and company drivers at BXPs; ensured the driver had a copy of the Road Movement Order, any necessary Customs paperwork, weapons manifests and they were aware of any limitations e.g. travelling in packets of 5 vehicles with 20 minute intervals between packets.
  • Checked companies’ freight for Dangerous Goods and prohibited items; mostly worked within Germany but also travelled to France and Canada for large Exercises. Also issued Customs forms when necessary e.g. the movement of weapons across international borders and built up a rapport with local Customs Authorities.
  • Qualified as a Rail Loading Supervisor (RLS) for the loading and unloading of vehicles on military trains; maintained safety throughout and briefed all personnel involved of any hazards etc.
  • Worked at Ports in Holland and Germany on Port Task Groups (PTG) each month for the military maintenance (Maint) vessel. Supervised and controlled the unload and load of the vessel. Produced the ship’s paperwork along with Customs paperwork. Also worked on a 3 day PTG in Jordan, in support of a large Exercise.
