Summary

I have 8 years of experience as a support worker for adults with learning disabilities. During this time I learnt how to work effectively within a team and build on my communication skills. Often there have been difficult conversations needed to be had with family members and I have always felt I had the tools needed to convey information correctly and precisely due to experience and having to deal with complex situations in work over the years.

As my role of support worker would suggest I have experience in supporting people in all areas of their day to day life. This includes personal care, which I understand can be a sensitive matter for some people receiving care. However, I always strive to work in a person centred way in order to maintain their dignity and make them feel as comfortable as possible as this is my upmost priority.

As a staff team of 10, we work hard to sustain communication between us by having daily handovers, written communication books and regular staff meetings in order to maintain continuity of care for the clients we support. I understand the importance of taking direction from my superiors and if I am ever unsure of anything, feel comfortable asking for help as this not only benefits myself but ensures the people I am supporting are receiving the best care possible.

Alongside supporting my clients with any personal care needs, I have the responsibility of administering their daily medication and re ordering anything else they require from the GP or arrange any medical care when and if it is necessary.

I have worked in many houses within the community and the needs of the clients vary greatly, with some people needing full support from a hoist and others the use of a wheelchair around the home and in the community. I also have experience with PEG feeding and stoma care.

I understand the importance of remaining professional in all situations is very important, but also being able to still have that level of compassion towards those you are looking after, I feel I have demonstrated this many times when clients have been unwell and I have had to comfort family members whist still doing my job to the best of my abilities.
