Head Of Data Science
NHS Arden And GEM CSU
Leicester, Leicestershire
02.2021 - 10.2024
As the Head of Data Science, I have played a pivotal role in shaping and advancing the organisation's data-driven initiatives. Here is a detailed description of my accomplishments and responsibilities in this role :
Strategic Vision : I played a key role in helping the organisation formulate short and medium-term strategies for our Data Science offering, aligning our data-driven initiatives with broader business objectives.
Building a High-Performing Team : I successfully established a robust Data Science team from the ground up, fostering a talented group of professionals who have collectively contributed to turning our Data Science vision into a tangible reality by delivering over 10 Machine learning projects.
Collaboration: I facilitated and configured collaboration among data scientists, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders within the organisation. Technical collaboration archived through Azure Devops, GitHub, mlflow and CI/CD. Cross-functional collaboration achieved through Lunch and Learns. Finally, collaboration with stakeholders is achieved through constant dialogue.
Advanced Healthcare Solutions: Led the team in developing critical case-finding tools for Diabetes, COPD, Social Prescribing, and Hypertension (WIP). The diabetes tool we developed is one of the finalists for HSJ Digital Award for Generating Impact Through Population Health. These tools harness clinical input, linked datasets, Machine Learning algorithms, and near real-time dashboards to help clinicians make better-informed decisions. I oversaw the end-to-end pipeline, provided hands-on leadership, and later developed RAPs (Reproducible Analytical Pipelines) on Databricks to extend the tools to other conditions.
ML Deployment Infrastructure: Collaborated with Azure architects to establish robust Machine Learning infrastructure, setting the stage for efficient model deployment. We leveraged technologies like MS Azure, Databricks, and MLOps (Mlflow) allowing the team to follow best practices while independently deploying models.
Diverse Model Deployment: I stay at the forefront of data science innovations and technologies. This involves exploring cutting-edge tools, machine learning algorithms, and artificial intelligence to continually enhance our ML capabilities. I oversaw the development and deployment of various models for Classification, Forecasting, Natural Language Processing (NLP) , Process Mining, and Discrete Event Simulation.
By leveraging technologies like Databricks, Azure, and Arden and GEM's Business Intelligence platform, we successfully tested proof of concept for a revolutionary platform to automate a self-help healthcare evaluation system to be used by clinical and health care professionals.
Business Development : Actively participated in responding to bids and crafting proposals, contributing to business growth. Worked with business development leads to introduce a comprehensive costing mechanism for our R&D products. Represented AGEM in various conferences and presented our work to enhance the visibility and credibility of our Data Science team.
Talent Acquisition: I invest in the professional growth of our team, nurturing talent and fostering a culture of continuous learning. Steered the recruitment of various roles, including junior and lead data scientists, project managers, data engineers, analysts, and visualisation developers, ensuring the team remains diverse, skilled, and well-rounded.
Ensured data governance adherence, resulting in zero data privacy breaches and maintaining the highest ethical standards. Safeguarded patient information and complied with regulatory requirements.
