MCA & DOLS Support Worker

My current position at UHS is within the over all Safeguarding Team and within the smaller team of MCA & DoLS. Comprising myself as the Support Worker, the Lead Practitioner and an admin.



Main duties:

Support Named Nurse and management team with the Safeguarding agenda.

Support CNS (Lead Practitioner) with the MCA & DoLS agenda.

Support Admin in their role and undertake some admin task where needed.

Support and manage a list of up to 122 MCA & DoLS patients in any given month.

Weekly ward rounds to all adult wards 54 in total at Southampton General Hospital (SGH) and Princess Ann Hospital (PAH).

I would visit some i.e. AMU Mon - Wed - Fri as this is where a lot of MCA & DoLS come from.

Would also do joint ward rounds with Adult Safeguarding and Transition Nurse





Screen incoming DoLS from wards/clinical areas.



Attending wards and amending DoLS paperwork to ensure compliance under the MCA 2005 framework.



Screening Mental Capacity Assessments (MCA's) to ensure decision is appropriate and completed to its fullest.



Assist/support health care professionals (HCP's) in completing correct documents.



Provide education to all involved in the decision making process trust wide.



Attend best interest meetings (BIM's) where appropriate.



Attend regional Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS)quarterly meetings. That now concentrate on MCA & DoLS practice as LPS has been put on hold.

Provide and share updates of ongoing MCA work plan.



Provide MCA & DoLS support to the other teams within Safeguarding and Mental Health.

6-8 weekly drop in sessions for MCA & DoLS. This is for staff/patients/visitors in the room for improvement.



Monthly trolley dash to ask staff questions around MCA & DoLS and to provide additional help and support and answer any questions staff may have.



Re invigorated the MCA & DoLS Tracker (Excel) so that is was process based and could easily be followed by staff who use it and have access including the Adult Safeguarding Team.

  • Took obs - manual BP/temp/height and weight/BMI/urine samples and document the results in the patients notes/ Charts (electronic).
  • Supported the Ultrasound department with Moving and handling of patients who needed it.
  • Followed directions on breast clinic days and supported Surgeons/registered practitioners to apply dressings and support in minor treatments such as drainage, cleaning, de-sloughing, closing of wounds.
  • Hosted and chaperoned clinics for the Maternity/Anti-Natal, Infertility, Breast, Gynae Clinical and Medical Oncology and supported the Pre-assessment department as an HCA too.
  • I was the Moving and Handling Lead and Health and Safety Link for Outpatients and Pre-assessment.
  • Provided M&H and Fire Prevention training on statutory and mandatory training days for the hospital.
  • Support on the yearly Theatres education/evacuation days.
  • LGBT co - chair for four years still supporting it eleven years later.
  • Managed the Tea and Coffee fund.
  • supported the Breast Team working out of hours clinics on saturday mornings on a rota basis.
  • supported other wards and clinics throughout PAH.

I have been a avid star trek fan since my youth and have watched all but 1 Star Trek series and read books from this franchise and star wars. Yes you can like both!

Play Nintendo switch but mainly PC gaming with friends all over the world. So team work and collaboration are a big thing for me.
