Housing and Building Service Manager

Gateshead Council Construction Services
06.2012 - 06.2018
  • This was an exciting role for the delivery of the Maintain Decency schemes (£6M) and a Building services department (£2.5M)
  • I managed and developed £8M of work of the Capital budget moving work from revenue as part of the asset plan
  • My role was to drive a team of between 60 -150 staff to work on a percentage of our 20,000 stock
  • I have a team of Project managers, admin and assistant managers to deliver these multi-disciplined schemes
  • Team development, building and progression is a major part of this role as when I first took over this section morale was poor, and processes were non-existent
  • After the first year the department ended up overachieving their targets and setting the standards for future deliveries, this was all down to strong teamwork and achievable goals
  • The Building Services department was like the MD department with a poor track record on the financial side of the business
  • This was slightly less complicated to resolve as it was simply putting a strong Project Manager in place to stabilise the financial and delivery side of the department
  • The first year was to achieve the spend but also change the behaviours and beliefs of the staff to be a positive and customer driven environment
