Summary

A Nuclear professional and chartered engineer, with 25 years experience of work in the nuclear field, encompassing most areas of the Sellafield site and some reactors. Proven track record in the safe and efficient delivery of complex projects, particularly within nuclear applications. Played key role in solving several of the sites major challenges, from recovery of plant breakdowns that have shut down operations, to extension of operating life of critical assets until replacement capacity can come on line. These have accrued multiple millions of pounds in savings to the site and tax payer. Recent years have had a focus on Post Operative Cleanout and Remediation of the site, building collaborative relationships with the customers and specialist technology providers, to develop methods to access, sample, characterise and decontaminate the plant. The opportunity to work towards accelerating hazard reduction and reducing the cost of decommissioning and waste storage has been both energising and rewarding.

Offering strong background in technology leadership with focus on innovation, communication, problem-solving, and team collaboration. Dedicated and enthusiastic, keen to pass on skills and knowledge to those with less experience and happy to lead teams or work within them to deliver shared goals.

Work history

Senior Technology Manager

UKNNL
Workington & Sellafield, Cumbria
01.2013 - Current
  • Led a range of complex projects, across multi-disciplinary Teams, including Remote Engineering, Design, Instruments and Inspection, to provide successful solutions to key Sellafield challenges.
  • Technical Lead and SME across the Nuclear Operations business, focusing on development of plant intervention technologies and techniques for inspection, sampling, characteristion and decontamination of active plant.
  • Evaluated and tested emerging technologies, to identify those with the potential for adaptation for nuclear usage. Adapted a range of COTS solutions and deployed on plant with successful outcomes.
  • Consultant and deployment lead for the UKNNL-SL Gamechangers program. Worked closely with SL to identify the most promising candidate technologies and supported them to develop their solutions to be fit for purpose for active deployment.
  • Sought funding for, built and Managed the Training, Evaluation and Deployment (TED) rig at the NNL Workington Rig hall. This is a collaborative modular facility between UKNNL & SL, which is also available for third parties to test and demonstrate systems in a safe non-active environment, and has been integral to gaining permission for active deployment of many projects.
  • Trained graduates and apprentices in both Workington rig hall and Sellafield operations to nominated supervisor level, enabling them to supervise work on plant. Mentored several colleagues through the process of obtaining chartered status.
  • Worked closely with the NNL Innovation Team, to provide support to applicants and also used funding to develop innovations that were then deployed as services to SL.
  • Safely deployed the technologies and solutions that were developed, in often challenging active environments.

Team Manager - Materials & Plant Inspection

NNL
Sellafield, Cumbria
08.2011 - 01.2013
  • Sanctioned and provided oversight and technical underpinning to all projects undertaken by the team.
  • Managed the Health & Safety, training, development and resource allocation of a team of approximately 20 people to ensure that the work was delivered efficiently to timescales, for a large number of customers across the Sellafield site.
  • Conducted performance evaluations to identify good performance as well as areas of improvement and training/support required for team members to develop.
  • Produced and maintained integrated work plan of current resource and worked with customers to identify emerging trends and requirements to plan future resource and equipment needs.
  • Reviewed and authorised all technical reports, prior to issue to customer, to ensure quality and consistency and to maintain an overview of the outputs of the team.
  • Trained and managed SQEP and nominated roles for the team.

Senior Assessor - Plant Inspection

Nexia Solutions/NNL
Sellafield, Cumbria
06.2005 - 12.2012
  • Lead Assessor for many areas of the Sellafield site, including Thorp, LAEMG, E&EP, LP&S, managing the inspection portfolio's, leading the inspections and working with customers to develop and implement Risk based Inspection (RBI) strategies to reduce costs, whilst continuing to ensure safe operations.
  • Produced technical reports to convey findings of all inspections and make recommendation's to maximise the operating life of the plant. Presented the reports to the relevant technical and operations committees to enable recommendations to be actioned where relevant.
  • Developed and deployed Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) systems for high value/critical plant items to accurately measure degradation rate of the life limiting features and predict remnant life so that projects to install replacement plant could be completed without loss of capacity.

Deputy Team manager - Materials and Inspection

BNFL/NSTS
Sellafield, Cumbria
11.2002 - 05.2005
  • Managed the performance and development of the team, performing regular reviews of both competency and performance and arranging training and opportunities to develop.
  • Managed the Team resource to ensure efficient utilisation and that SQEP resources are matched to the task/project.

Junior Plant Assessor

BNFL
Sellafield, Cumbria
10.1999 - 11.2002
  • Role was split approximately 50-50 between Plant Assessment and forensic failure investigations.
  • Investigated plant failures through collection of evidence including operating conditions, collected from plant instrumentation, operator reports and visual evidence and then carried out laboratory based investigation, usually metallographic in nature, including sampling deposits, sectioning & polishing, examination of surface under optical and SEM to identify root cause of failure and produce report on results.
  • Performed remote visual inspections and hands on NDT (Dye Pen, Ultrasonics, hardness testing) to assess condition of plant to support continued safe operations.
