Summary

After completing my Joinery Apprenticeship and working as a Joiner for several years I decided to try and further my career by moving into the Civils and Utilities Industry. I began this journey in 2004 and have worked on several large scale projects as a sub-contractor before becoming a Sub-Contractor Manager, then a Field Supervisor for the Main Contractor and finally to the Main Client as a Delivery and Compliance Engineer. I am a highly motivated and hardworking individual that possess excellent communications skills. I am very adaptable and enjoy meeting and working with new customers, clients and colleagues. The majority of my employment history has been in engineering/construction customer facing roles, this has given me the confidence to express my knowledge of these industries in a professional manner without hesitation. I feel I have good operational and commercial awareness as I have been in positions for both the Contractor and the Client. This has given me the insight into the restrictions and limitations that both sides come up against and has helped me and the companies I have worked for benefit from my conflict resolution capabilities, not only with each other but also with other stakeholders and customers . My current role is within Openreach as a Patch Area Manager, which is currently a hybrid role

  • Team Managing 57 engineers that consists of Patch Leads, Delivery engineers, Copper engineers and apprentices
  • My team cover all aspects of business including FND issues, Core issues, build issues and new sites and FTTP roll out
  • Responsible for ensuring that my team are dealing efficiently and focus on delivery of our product on behalf of CPs we provide for considering Safety (Home Safe everyday attitude) considering what training or development is required for my team.
  • Dealing with customer face Issues to get Success on the day supporting our on time first time strategy.
  • Liaising with team on planning Tree Cutting and submitting A55 plan of scope of works to be completed including Traffic Management if required.
  • Planning proactively with Poling team and contractors to ensure poles are erected efficiently and to specification for customer resolution.
  • Ensuring that engineers are fully up to date with Safety Checks, and are aware of any changes to processes.
  • Working actively to ensure that work carried out in the vicinity of Overhead Power is conducted safely and that engineers are aware of the difference of 11KV and 33KV and the correct safety standards.
  • Working efficiently as practical as possible taking into consideration the risks and costs, and that these are constrained and manged and targets are set for a successful outcome
  • Working closely with my team and as a wider group on new initiatives including civils and engineering programmes to delver our committed delivery of Full Fibre broadband to both rural villages towns and cities across the North
  • More of my responsibilities include engagement and motivation of my team so we can deliver results, completion of safety checks and participation in the companies Environmental Management system
  • Engage daily and weekly with senior management on performance and leadership to deliver the right service at the right cost with optimum delivery to tight deadlines
  • As a manger you are also given a lead role, mine is in Training and development and I work closely with the Training department and with all the other Patch Managers that we are training to what is required and what is patch dependent on a timely and cost effective basis.
  • Finally I am accountable for informing, collaborating and challenging our key stakeholders performance to ensure that they deliver the right outcomes and are commercially aware of their roles also
  • Virgin Media - My role was originally a Build Engineer with Virgin Media changing to a Principal Delivery Engineer I worked closely with our Head Office, Build team and Civils Contractor in regard to Design, Technical Specifications and Budgetary Requirements
  • I manage the planning and build of our FTTC & FTTP Network to new areas and have the responsibility to ensure the build is done not only to the standards set out by Virgin Media but also the standards of the Department of Infrastructure
  • Working closely with our Planners and Contractor, using my knowledge and experiences of the industry to find more effective or beneficial ways to carry out our works
  • Close cooperation with the Department of Infrastructure, Translink and the PSNI to ensure we follow all procedures for obtaining permits for work, such as road closures or temporary traffic lights to name a few
  • Completion of my Associated Project Management Foundation Course (APM) achieving over 80% and have used my new skills and understanding in this field to help with our companies move to the NEC4 Contract
  • With having my IOSH and NEBOSH qualifications I would take the lead on Health & Safety within our team of Build Engineers, whilst liaising with VM Health and Safety Management on ensuring our contractors are working to the required standards via Audits , Safe on Arrivals , Plant inspections , and Traffic Management solutions.
  • Involved with implementing and planning PIA within the BT Network.
  • Starting out as a Front Line Manager within KN Networks I was responsible for the scheduling of works, supervision and quality assurance of the FTTC Build and Cabling
  • I worked closely with the BT Operations Teams, Planning Teams and Management to co-ordinate works on the BT Network
  • I used my previous experiences on other utility and ground work projects to better my knowledge of the BT Network and to build rapport with customers, colleagues and management
  • As I excelled in this role I was given the opportunity of becoming the Senior Front Line Manager, responsible for leading the team, providing advice and guidance and training the team in any new procedures or processes.

  • I spent ten years with this company from 2004 until 2014 in various large scale contracts all over Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland
  • I initially started out as a Sub contractor in Dublin on a small scale project with a team of four men
  • After several months of work which was ahead of schedule and to the highest of standards I was offered a large contract on a Road Realignment scheme in Naas Co Kildare incorporating all types of civil engineering works
  • While managing this project I increased my team from four to twenty two men at its peak
  • On completion of this project Carey's decided to offer me the role of Sub-Contractor Manager, this role involved daily admin and HR duties for the teams, scheduling of works, report writing and meeting with contractors and clients to discuss works and financial sign offs, while always making sure my teams were working to the highest of standards
  • All types of Civil Engineering work was carried out from start of project to completion, including site preparation, sub base, base, foundations including shuttering etc, duct laying, for third parties such as Irish water, ESB, including joint pits etc, telecoms, leading on to various stages of the build and onwards to completion of the project.
  • During my time with Carey's I worked on several large scale projects for clients including the building of the two new Ikea stores north and south.
  • Ballymum Regeneration for Fingal County Council which was the demolishing and rebuilding of tower block apartments, i was responsible for various roles in this project including working with ESB on pot ending and removal of redundant cables as well as preparation and trenching and laying of duct for the new cables from substations etc.
  • Bruckana Wind Farm in Co Kilkenny which involved the construction of reinforced turbine foundations the building of a 38KV extension to the substation and and a 38 KV overhead transmission line to accommodate the grid connection, this project was in a remote location and good coordination was essential that materials and deadlines were met to prevent costly delays.
  • During this period I was able to build rapport with Local Authorities, Architects, Civil Engineers and several other professions picking up new skills, enhancing my communication skills and proving my abilities to run large contracts to the highest of standards.
