Orla Garvey

Civil engineering graduate with a strong academic background and hands-on experience through lab work and university projects. Eager to apply my knowledge and skills and highly motivated to gain practical engineering experience, contribute to real-world civil engineering projects and develop on-site skills. A team player with excellent communication skills, strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn quickly in fast-paced environments.

University Design Projects

• Retaining wall - Completed a site investigation and produced an outline and detailed design for a cantilever retaining wall, as well as contractual information, construction programme and setting out information, as an individual project.
• Car park - Based on a project that required the design and construction programme for a multi-story car park, which was organized to mimic a typical construction/project development process, in response to a client's brief. Presented an outline design and produced a site and material investigation report, contractor information pack and preliminary design information pack.
• Redevelopment projects - Completed numerous group projects which were based on redeveloping current buildings, with the main consideration being the sustainability of the construction and future use.

Geotechnical Lab Investigations

• Conducted triaxial tests, standard compaction tests, sieve analysis and Atterberg limits. Used collected data to interpret results and prepare geotechnical reports.

Short-term Engineering Experience

• In 2019, I arranged a one-week work experience placement with WSP in Birmingham. During my placement, I spent a day in each sector including highways, geotechnical, history, structures and project management. The experience was very insightful and led me to pursue a career in Civil Engineering.
• In 2023, I arranged a placement with Shannonside Civil Engineering, shadowing a Civil Engineer and a Quantity Surveyor. This involved attending site visits and meetings to gain an understanding of what both roles involved and putting the theory into practice.
