Additional Information

  • Basic reception duties I am aware of the reception duties in any organisation. In my present job, I act as the first point of contact and I am faced with dealing with different people from every works of life, I display my listening skill to whoever wants to talk; I answer the telephone and take messages and logged appointments in the office diary; Communicated effectively with colleagues by means of day book, email or during hand over. I have clear understanding of maintaining an accurate record, not only as required by law but as a form of best practice, I have kept client's money and valuables, input details into the central client's data and done the general administrative duties as required.
  • Hostel or care setting. My understanding of working in a hostel and care setting began in 2001.I worked as a care assistant with various residential and nursing homes, which involved giving personal care to the elderly by assisting them with their daily activities. These included bathing, dressing, meals, medication and sometimes their shopping; I also carry out light domestic duties. Over the last 3yrs I worked consistently with the Focus SC recruitment agency where I gained most of my experiences within hostels, rolling shelter, mental health, substance misuse units and semi-independent. During my shift, I normally at the reception answering calls and door buzzer, as a first point of contact, I am faced with dealing with different people ranging from the homeless who are being booked in, referral teams, agencies or specialist. Also trade and services and people with language constraints - people from all works of life. I carry out my duties efficiently such as when booking in new residents; I always explain the rules and regulations of the hostel, compiling of files for individual tenants. I carry out daily room checks and issue out warnings appropriately, I look out for sharps during health and safety checks, making sure the environment is hazard free. I update dairies and remind residents of their appointments, my duty also involves liaising with other agencies regarding vacancies and personal issues which will be of benefit for the residents. Supported Housing management My experience in semi-independent unit for low support -need has exposed me to the duties required in managing a shared or self-contained accommodation. Firstly, I screen the referrals before interviewing potential candidates. Before the interview the applicant would view the rooms and the entire project, I will introduce the rules and regulations which needs to be adhered at all times, show them the facilities available to them such as laundry, bath, kitchen, etc. and if they are satisfied, I will carry out the interview. At interview, my main aim is to look out for certain things like their views on sharing, equal opportunity, ability to pay rent, previous housing history, physical and mental health and ambition. If the applicant is successful, they will be informed and invited for booking- in, when booking in a tenant, I will ensure that the tenant signs the tenancy, housing benefit form, supporting agreement and house rules, I will then set up a file for the tenant where a copy of all agreements will be kept for record purpose. The tenant would be giving the handbook which is the projects directory for services. I help in filling and submitting the housing benefit form. Some tenants who are working part time or with low income would require me to check their HB entitlement by checking with the HB calculator. I make myself available as a key worker and supported housing officer; I get involve in house keeping and management such as the health and safety check, fire safety procedure, first aid, cleaning of the project etc. I also have initiated a cleaning of a cluster by creating a rota for the tenants occupying the cluster and they were impressed by the plan. In October 2004, I got offered a job as a night manager with West London YMCA and my duties are to carry out waking night duties such as ensuring that tenants adheres to all rules in the projects, monitoring of the CCTV, taking routine checks round the projects for any kind of disturbances and reporting to the day manager on issues like incidents, maintenance, rent, rota and overviews.
