Student at University of Liverpool | Biomedical Science (Bsc) with Honours | Passionate about Immunology, Pharmacology, Genetics, Embryology and the Gut Microbiome.
This experience was life-changing. I witnessed firsthand how Biomedical Science is put into practise in a real and inspiring way. I was given the opportunity to observe embryo transfers and egg collections which highlighted the way in which the embryologists and the medical team worked cohesively and efficiently together. Furthermore, I observed: egg cells under the microscope, ICSI, embryo thawing and the removal of cells from a blastocyst needing to undergo Pre-implantation Genetic Testing (PGT). A particular area which sparked my curiosity, was how abnormal cells can be difficult to detect within the embryo during PGT due to mosaicism. Witnessing the use of a time-lapse Embryoscope, enabling you to see the stages of the embryo formation, was truly amazing and made me eager to understand the biotechnological advancements which are in turn impacting humans for the better.
