My name is Ollie; I am a dedicated and resilient individual with a strong work ethic, proven both on and off the rugby field. Having played rugby since the age of six, I have developed excellent teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. This has helped me coach younger age groups, which has given me experience in teaching and helping others. In March 2022, I was diagnosed with cancer and underwent treatment, an experience that strengthened my determination, mental toughness, and positive attitude. I have completed my GCSEs and A Levels, demonstrating my ability to stay focused and committed through challenging circumstances. I am now eager to apply these qualities in a dynamic and purposeful environment. My main goal is to have a career in rugby, ideally as a player.
As part of my role, I maintain the cleanliness of kitchen equipment, tableware, and utensils after their use; handle waste management; control the stock and deliveries; and perform basic food preparation and equipment support. I ensure the kitchen is kept clean and hygienic at all times, including essential equipment such as pots, pans, trays, and kitchen utensils, while also cleaning floors, surfaces, and appliances as required. The waste management area of my job involves disposing of rubbish and recycling efficiently and appropriately to help keep the waste areas tidy and safe for others. The basic food preparation involves helping the other members of staff prepare the necessary food required for the day, while also helping the starters and dessert chefs if required by doing cheques put through by Front of House Staff. Stock handling in my job involves handling deliveries of both food items (frozen, dry store, or fridge) and consumables (i.e. toilet roll, blue roll, cleaning supplies, etc), while also rotating stock to minimise waste, i.e., things that will go out of date first are put at the front to be used before the newer stock. Finally, another part of my role as a kitchen porter is equipment support. This means I supply the other Back of House staff with any equipment they need, while maintaining other necessary equipment and reporting issues if needed.
Worked under pressure during peak times without compromising on quality of work delivered.
Swept and mopped floors at the end of shifts to ensure a tidy workspace the next day.
I maintained stock levels to meet customer demand efficiently, collected glasses and cleared tables to ensure a clean environment, and cultivated positive customer relations through attentive service.
Quickly learned and applied new skills to daily tasks, improving efficiency and productivity.
Demonstrated respect, friendliness, and willingness to help wherever needed.
Worked flexible hours, covering nights, weekends, and bank holidays.
Offered friendly, efficient customer service and handled challenging situations with ease.
Displayed energy and enthusiasm in afast-paced environment.
My work experience with a secondary school PE department involved supporting the teachers in the delivery of a wide range of sports and physical education activities. This includes helping to set up and pack away equipment, assisting with the supervision of students during lessons, and encouraging participation and good sportsmanship. I also helped to lead warm-ups, demonstrate basic techniques, and provide individual support to students of varying ability levels. The role offered me valuable insight into lesson planning, student engagement, and classroom management, while also highlighting the importance of promoting physical health and teamwork in an educational setting.
I assisted the school rugby coach in coaching younger age groups. This involved supporting the head coach in planning and delivering training sessions, helping to develop players’ skills, fitness, and understanding of the game. As part of this, I assisted in setting up drills, giving individual feedback, and ensuring sessions ran smoothly and safely. The key attributes I brought to this voluntary role were strong communication skills, enthusiasm, and a good knowledge of the game obtained through years of playing rugby.
Coached players in real-game situations, offering tactical support and encouragement; tailored sessions to provide physical challenge to individuals with varying abilities; instilled a sense of commitment, drive, and responsibility in young people.
I was part of Birmingham Youth Voice, which involved regular meetings with other young people to discuss issues facing the youth of Birmingham to liaise with the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, and encourage change in local policies. I visited Liverpool with this group to meet with their Liverpool Youth Programme to create connections and show them what we had been able to achieve in Birmingham. Through BYV, I was chosen to be a flag bearer at the launch ceremony for the Commonwealth Games. As part of BYV, I was instrumental in creating the 'Be Bold Be Birmingham' catchphrase used throughout the Commonwealth Games. This statement is still used to this day to promote Birmingham as a city.
I took part in the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh but was unable to fully complete all aspects, due to my diagnosis; however, I was still given the award. As part of this, I volunteered at my rugby club and school, I began to learn British Sign Language, and I took part in a weekend of expeditions as part of a team.
I have played rugby since I was 6 for Birmingham Moseley, Kings Norton, and Worcester rugby clubs. I have also represented my school throughout my secondary education. I played as part of the ACE Rugby Programme, which is a National Rugby Programme, for Stourport Sixth Form. I have previously used my now 12 years of rugby experience to teach younger children within my secondary school and as a part of my work experience. This gives me excellent transferable teaching skills for the workplace.
