Summary

After half a decade in teaching, I decided to challenge myself and start a career in a long held interest of mine: development. For eighteen months I taught myself how to develop websites, starting with the basics of HTML all the way to full stack sites using React with NodeJS. In January 2023 I started my first role as a Junior Web Developer / Onsite Technician and am now flourishing in the tech sector as a Full Stack Developer for an eCommerce agency in Birmingham.

Of course, I still have the skills and knowledge I gained as a teacher and put them to use everyday - whether it's helping colleagues with projects, using my interpersonal skills with clients, or effectively managing my time while juggling several builds at the same time.

Outside of work I am an avid gamer and spend much of my time reading and often writing fiction. Recently, I joined a local archery club and am looking forward to starting competitions next year.

Work history

Full Stack Developer

Cake Agency
Birmingham
06.2024 - 04.2025
  • In my current role I manage the development of multiple Shopify websites simultaneously. This can range from small amends to a site with a prebuilt theme, all the way to creating custom themes from the ground up.
  • I work with designers to create responsive, mobile ready sites that actively increase the add to cart rate and generate revenue for a wide range of clients that sell everything from the latest fashion to cat patios and even whisky.
  • Also as a part of this role I use Webflow to create beautiful sites to generate consumer interest in products and brands, all the while using third party CRM sites such as Mailchimp and Klaviyo to continue a customers journey and increase engagement with strategic marketing campaigns.

Web Developer / Onsite Technician

LiveBuzz
Coventry
01.2023 - 04.2025
  • This was my first developer position, where I worked in a tight knit team of around 11 developers to design, create and deploy registration pages for corporate events hosting thousands of visitors.
  • I worked productively alongside relationship managers and clients to create bespoke products that fulfil a wide variety of needs.
  • While some projects required a team effort, I also worked independently to create sites using Laravel, PHP, JavaScript, HTML and SCSS, and as a team used Git to streamline complex builds.
  • In another side of this role, I managed a team of staff to assist visiting customers, maintain a positive relationship with clients, and ensure a smooth registration process at trade events.
  • While onsite, my duties also involved building and maintaining Linux servers and a local network with printers, touch screens and scanners and troubleshooting issues.

Supply Teacher

Aspire Education
Warwickshire
09.2022 - 01.2023
  • While preparing to leave education for my first role as a developer, I worked for several months as a supply teacher at a dozen schools in the Warwickshire area.
  • I worked tirelessly with students and classes to step in when teachers were unable to be in the lesson.
  • I developed many skills during my time as a supply teacher as I travelled to numerous school not knowing the children or staff. This in turn further developed my confidence and communication with both colleagues and children from a variety of backgrounds.

Teacher of Mathematics & Computer Science

Ashlawn School
Rugby
01.2020 - 09.2022
  • This role entailed all you would expect from a modern secondary school teacher - maintaining behaviour standards, working with students and parents to foster relationships and improve results, and administrative duties to ensure lessons ran smoothly.
  • On top of the time management and interpersonal skills needed in a teaching role, I also needed the dedication and discipline to work outside of school hours and always needed to be organised.
  • Furthermore, I helped create and run a chess club and maths tutoring as extra-curricular activities.

Teacher of Mathematics

Harris C of E Academy
09.2018 - 12.2019
  • I taught children from Year 7 to Year 11 Mathematics while managing to complete the various tasks, observations and activities needed to pass my NQT year.
  • This was no small effort but I accomplished it well through use of hard work and my nurturing nature.
