  • Role: Managing the 1st team and academy teams along with the Performance team
  • Experience description: This internship at Red Bull Bragantino’s training facility in Brazil greatly developed my experience of working in professional sports. Spending 2 weeks at the training facility with the performance team allowed me to open my understanding of the preparation of athletes for competition as well as my application of this understanding on the athletes. Furthermore, the unique part of this internship was that being in Brazil, I was able to widen my scope of contemporary challenges that practitioners face in different areas of the world. Furthermore, in the nutrition unit, I worked with a young athlete who was struggling to put on mass and using my knowledge of nutrition and muscle synthesis together with the doctor we constructed a dietary plan for the athlete. This experience was pivotal in guiding me into potential career paths in the future.

I was fortunate enough to secure a paid part time work experience in one of the Triathlon races during summer. This experience involved managing the timings, swimming, running and biking paths and bringing the appropriate gear, nutrition, and shelter for the athletes that were staying overnight for the 2 day race. Being involved in the organization of a sports event largely developed my communicational skills with the team I was working with, managing my tasks, critical thinking and problem solving skills when determining the appropriate paths for the cyclists while tackling challenges such as having to close the roads in the local town when the race is taking place. All these skills are essential in the work space and this experience greatly contributed to the construction of these skills.

Other non-work experiences

Playing in Football teams (Evolution Academy, Al Sadd club, Al Markhiya Sports Club) (2022 – 2024)

  • Relevant skills used and developed in this activity:
  • Communication and team-work: Being in a football team, which is a team sport, required me to communicate and work together with my team to achieve victory. Team-work often comes with sacrifices, for example, having to take up the role of a player who is out of position. It can also come with struggles such as miscommunication and disagreements. However, playing in a team has taught me to effectively communicate with my team-mates, make sacrifices for the overall benefit of the team as well as avoiding disagreements, which are all important qualities that are relevant in the work space
  • Leadership qualities: Playing football, especially while you are the captain of the team requires you to effectively guide your team tactically and mentally to win the game. Towards the end of the season, I was appointed as the captain of my team which meant I was responsible for giving instructions to the team, guiding the positioning and the tactical decision of the team. Being the captain of the team helped me build my courage to take the steps for the team and taking responsibility of being in charge. This helped me face my fears, build my resilience and also be a mentor/leader for my other teammates.
  • Discipline and dedication: Playing in any sport where regular and consistent training is required builds your discipline and dedication. Despite having multiple assignments and duties for school and other extracurricular activities to do, I still managed my time and took the time to commit myself to playing and training football while also managing my time wisely.

Flag Bearing in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022

  • Risk taking: When I was offered the role to volunteer as a flag bearer in the world’s most watched sporting events, I was excited but also extremely nervous to present myself in front of a global audience. However, my decision to partake in this activity not only helped me realize the importance of exiting my comfort zone, but also taught me that good results usually come from risky decisions.
