I intend to pursue a career in paediatrics and I would value the opportunity to become a part of your paediatrics team. As outlined below, I have experience of providing care for paediatric patients in different settings which I have thoroughly enjoyed and learned from. I provide compassionate and empathetic patient care and I develop trusting professional relationships with children and their relatives. I am a reliable, hard-working and enthusiastic team member and I work well under pressure. As a member of your team, as well as providing a high standard of patient care, I would look forward to the opportunity to increase my exposure to paediatrics in a new department and continuing to develop important paediatric skills.
I currently work as an SHO in the Accident and Emergency Department. I particularly enjoy working in the paediatrics area where I regularly assess babies and children in A+E with a variety of medical and surgical conditions. I have developed organisational, time management, prioritisation and problem-solving skills by looking after multiple undifferentiated unwell children. I can complete detailed A to E assessments, recognise deteriorating patients and communicate effectively with parents and colleagues which are important skills for doctor working in paediatrics. I am aware of my limitations and escalate to seniors in a timely manner. Developing the above skills has prepared me well for being able to ensure patient safety and provide a high standard of patient care in a busy paediatric department by remaining calm under pressure, working in a team and valuing the experience and input of nursing staff and allied health professionals.
During my Foundation Year 2 year, I worked in the Paediatric department, in General Practice and in the Accident and Emergency Department. During each of these rotations I developed my confidence with assessing unwell children. I particularly enjoyed my rotation in Paediatrics. I developed important practical skills including cannulation of babies and children, capillary blood sampling, NIPE examinations, assisting with lumbar punctures and learning how to perform paediatric intra-osseous access. I received a ‘learning from excellence’ certificate for developing my paediatric cannulation skills. I have become confident with the common practical procedures and I look forward to developing new skills. I can reassure, distract and comfort children which is an important part of compassionate care in paediatrics and I value the involvement of nurses and play specialists. I feel competent with handling and examining young babies presenting to hospital with common problems including feeding difficulties.
During my Foundation Year 1 year, I worked in Elderly Medicine, General Medicine and Trauma and Orthopaedics wards.
Advanced Paediatric Life Support course
I am experienced in assessing and formulating initial management plans for acutely unwell children. I have developed these skills during the Advanced Paediatric Life Support course. I have also improved these skills by completing the ‘spotting the sick child’ course.
Medical Elective in Paediatric Oncology and Haematology
I completed an elective in Paediatric Oncology and Haematology which was a valuable opportunity to observe the delivery of high standard and compassionate care for unwell children some of whom were palliative. This has influenced the way I would provide care as a paediatrician and it gave me an insight into the importance of finding out what matters most to a child and their family during an extremely difficult time. I created a SOP for the use of cryotherapy for children and adolescents with cancer for the prophylaxis of mucositis from chemotherapy infusions. This was published on the trust intranet and is still in use by the department.
Taster Week in Community Paediatrics
I completed a taster week in community paediatrics where I observed the assessment of children with neurodevelopmental disorders and developmental delay. This gave me an insight into the valuable role of paediatricians and the multidisciplinary team in the community.
Safeguarding
I have developed my understanding of safeguarding in children and have completed the level 3 safeguarding course. I have assessed children in A+E with possible non-accidental injuries. I appreciate the vital role of paediatricians in the safeguarding of children.
Restart the Heart
I was a part of the ‘restart the heart’ campaign where I taught the public how to perform CPR. I enjoyed instilling confidence in people with no prior experience to initiate and perform CPR.
Community First Responder
I volunteered as a 'Community First Responder' with Yorkshire Ambulance Service where I performed initial assessments on patients prior to the arrival of the paramedics.
Teaching
I completed an intercalated degree in Medical Education and obtained a first-class honours degree. I designed and delivered regular weekly teaching sessions for students and I facilitated interprofessional teaching sessions.
I was part of the Leeds Peer-Run Examination Practice committee which was an initiative to help medical students revise for OSCEs. I organised and facilitated regular mock OSCE sessions and group teaching sessions.
Quality Improvement Project
I designed and led a QIP which involved updating guidelines to improve the assessment and management of infants with suspected pyloric stenosis. I presented at our FY2 QIP showcase event and received the award for the best QIP.
Students without borders - Spanish module
During medical school I completed the 'Students without borders Spanish module' which involved studying Spanish with a focus on medical topics and developing medical vocabulary.
