All in pursuit of the service's strategic goals and improved local outcomes for our communities. I am ready and fully committed to continue developing further in the Station Commander role and successfully serve as a modern public sector leader in a Fire and Rescue Service for the people of Scotland.

Work history

Watch Commander (Local Area Liaison Officer)

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service
Perth, Perth and Kinross
06.2024 - Current
  • Successfully led and implemented range of strategic community safety and youth engagement initiatives, directly supporting SFRS Strategic Outcomes, the priorities of the Fire and Rescue Framework for Scotland 2022, in particular Prevention and Protection, Partnership and Innovation and Modernisation, in turn positively contributing to Scottish Governments National Outcomes and performance indicators. These efforts contributed to improved community safety, enhanced wellbeing, and reduced inequalities across Perth & Kinross.
  • Through strong direction and guidance, my team proactively collaborated with local housing providers, along with wider teams and several community groups to deliver bespoke risk recognition training to staff and residents. This targeted prevention work contributed to the lowest level of fire-related injuries in the local authority area in 15 years—demonstrating measurable impact on community wellbeing and resilience.
  • I have chaired the multi-agency Perth & Kinross Partnership Approach to Water Safety group since taking on the LALO role and led ongoing delivery of water safety programmes across local schools. This has reached over 3,000 pupils and contributed to national reductions in water-related deaths and injuries - supporting the national outcome of a healthier, safer Scotland. Also led and facilitated Drowning Incident Reviews to guide continuous improvement and targeted prevention activities as part of Scotland's national drowning prevention strategy.
  • Led on planning and delivery of a number of Fire Skills youth engagement programmes. This included first in PKAD to offer an accredited employability award. These initiatives supported the Perth and Kinross Local Outcome Improvement Plan and national priorities around employability and health and wellbeing. I have also built strong relationships with care-experienced young people through collaboration with local CHAMPS groups within schools, fulfilling our responsibilities as a corporate parent, in turn promoting inclusion and improved outcomes for some of our most disadvantaged and vulnerable young people.
  • Actively worked with operational crews across area to raise awareness of and embed the Community Intelligence Report resource into daily work routines. This has created a positive increase in the amount of information being shared through local Tasking and Co-Ordination arrangements across the multi-agency community safety partnership. In further support of this work, I implemented and launched a multi-agency Dangerous Buildings Working Group, contributing to improved firefighter safety through enhanced, innovative operational intelligence gathering while also combating anti-social behaviour through effective partnership working.
  • Initiated, designed and began delivery of an Early Years Road Safety Education programme, forming part of a wider collaborative project alongside Local Authority Road Safety Co-ordinator, embedding road safety education back within primary schools and closing a gap that I identified had appeared within the local area. I also continue to lead the introduction of the Biker Down initiative within Perthshire enhancing road safety and public engagement.
  • Represented SFRS at high-level forums including delivering presentations to elected members within local authority scrutiny committees on two occasions, showcasing attention to detail, strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Supported LSO management team through participation in Community Planning Partnership Workshop, representing SFRS alongside wide variety of public sector leaders to support future direction of local outcome improvement plan.
  • Deputised for the prevention Station Commander through chairing the Perth and Kinross Road Safety Partnership and also contributed to national Crew Commander Promotion Process through interview panel participation.
  • Proactively achieved significant professional development during this period, including successful completion of the NFCC Supervisory Leadership Development Programme, IFE Level 3 Diploma examinations (Fire Engineering Science, Fire Safety, Leadership & Management) while also successfully completed the L&D9Di Assessor Award, demonstrating ability to effectively plan and balance self-study alongside day-to-day workloads.
