I have skills like client rapport, empathy, compassion, active listening, organization, record keeping, and the desire to help one's fellow human being. I also have the ability to motivate and build patients' self-esteem and self-confidence, and I feel fulfilled making a difference in the lives of others.
I also worked in the mental health and support care sector for quite a while and I believe that with my training and qualification of Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Health and Social care coupled with my personal skills of open mind, sensitivity, good listening, caring nature and the desire to work with people of all ages. I have also worked with autism patients, people with disability and dementia.
I worked with two elderly couples; the man was disabled, and the woman was independent, though l still supported her with her day-to-day activities, like making the meals, preparing their medications, supporting the maintenance in their house and other things. He was hospitalised; during my training with the community, l was taught how to use the lifter and equipment. I hoist him up from the bed with the hoist whenever l want to feed him, change his position to the wheelchair, or when l want to change the bed. Also, l cleaned him up in the bed, changed his underwear and redressed him. Having some experience with them, l enjoyed the challenge that the role presented, and l also very much enjoyed the responsibility of providing the right level of care for them.
Some families bring their elderly parents to the church 3 times a week, morning till evening. l voluntarily took care of them, l support them with their day-to-day activities, like taking short walks with them, making their meals, feeding the ones that are not capable, going to the toilet, and doing some activities with them e.g.(drawing & bowling). My accomplishment is, every day, l am helping someone in need and making their lives better. seeing them smiling provides a real sense of satisfaction.
