Whilst in the Army my career was varied, depending on each rank and where I was stationed. The last four years of my career my position was Quartermaster Sergeant (SQMS) at DST Leconfield, East Yorkshire. My duties involved: facilitating new recruits living accommodation, facilitating new recruits paperwork on arrival in to the barracks, overseeing over 1600 recruits, trainees and civilian employees with regards to the maintenance and upkeep of their living/working environment, most importantly ensuring all troops were correctly and safely equipped for duty.

UWO (Unit Welfare Officer)My job in this department covered working more with military family members and any difficulties that they were experiencingwhilst a spouse was deployed on active service. My responsibilities were making sure the families of overseas military members(Jamaica, Fiji, Afghan,Ghana) had full access to schooling for themselves or theirchildren, as well as a working knowledge/understanding of how to apply for additional paperwork, funding, benefits, housing and naturalisation.There were occasions when I had to assist families with outside agencies such as Special Needs Coordination, contacting agencies for special refitting of housing with appropriate equipment in it. I attended a twelve week intensive course in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages).I was also responsible for accompanying (on occasion) Military membersto court appearances, and then processing discharge /disciplinarypaperwork if necessary.
