I started in 'Mechanical Maintenance Engineering' in 1990 and pursued this career for 13 years.
Following that I worked in the retail industry. I worked for TESCO's. Whilst at Tesco's I applied to join the Territorial Army and I was successful in becoming a 'Combat Medical Technician' (CMT).
I left Tesco's to join a care agency 'Care Plus' based in my local community to deliver care to people in their own home. It was during this time that I was mobilised, by the Army to deploy on Op Herrick 14 to Afghanistan in Nov 2010 to Nov 2011 as CMT.
Being a CMT has been one of the most rewarding jobs that I could have ever asked for. I am good at looking after people and I find that I am able to build a rapport with those that I meet.
Afghanistan was challenging due to the austerity of the facilities that we had on the ground and how we could treat patients/casualties. On return I became my mother's primary carer. Supporting her with her daily needs, appointments, medication and rehabilitation. I do this while still working for the Army in a part-time capacity.
The role I was in for the best part of 7 years from 2013 - 2020 involved the health administration of the battalions personnel. Making sure that they are fully fit to go wherever they are needed. This is done by checking for in-date vaccinations or vaccinations required due to the country they are going to, audiometry, overall health screening and updating their medical records. Supporting those who have been injured whilst on duty. Instructing and supporting Battalion and company training in regards to 'Battlefield First Aid', exercising troop and 'RLS'.
Primary role for Bristol UOTC is to book all transport for the unit whether using 'Fleet' vehicles or 'Hire' vehicles.
Using timelines to book the hire vehicles using a logistic booking system. Whether Hire or Fleet it allows it gives us the capability to borrow vehicles from other units or providers here and overseas.
Secondary role is to support the unit with Fire Health & Safety. Providing support to the Fire Safety Manager when conducting Fire Drills. Checking that the Fire panels are working correctly and liaising with the contractors that maintain the panels/fire extinguishers. Completed a 'Defence Fire Maintainer Course' which developed further knowledge and understanding in how to operate/maintain them.
Thirdly, that of Unit Welfare Senior NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer). To administer/sign post the officer cadets should they require support or advice, guidance if theirs or someone else's wellbeing is of concern.
Day to day medical administration of the battalions personnel.
