I started my career in mental health nursing in 2003, I gained experience in adult services working on a mother and baby unit, PICU and crisis teams. In 2014, I completed a degree in Specialist Public Health Nursing. During my degree I passed the V100 Nurse prescribing. I returned back to mental health nursing a year after completing my degree, as I missed this area of nursing. I am highly motivated individual who is passionate about personal development and strives to improve the development of the service and care we provide to our service users.
After working in Adult Services for 17 years, I felt it was time to further my career and expertise, therefore in 2019 I applied for a band 7 position in CAMHS Home Treatment Team and was successful. CAMHS Home Treatment Team is a Tier 4 intensive service that supports young people aged 13yrs-18yrs presenting in crisis. Our team is a nurse led service, with an 8 -12 week pathway working alongside the community quadrants. We cover the whole of Hertfordshire, working in mini teams being led by the senior nurses. I have and continue to work with many adults and children with a diagnosis of ADHD and ASD alongside other mental health diagnosis.
After passing my V300 last year, I assess clients on our caseload, diagnose and treat. I have regular supervision with our consultant psychiatrist.
The aim of our services is to prevent our young people from having an inpatient admission, so that we can safely treat them in their own environment with our intensive support.
In our service we regularly review medication, effectiveness and side effects. I understand the benefits of some treatments, as opposed to other treatments in line with the NICE guidelines.
My current role enables me to work autonomously, as well as working as part of an MDT. I carry out comprehensive assessments which involves mental state examinations, risk assess and creating a person centred care plan involving the young person and their families and carers. I assess the capacity of individuals to help them make informed decisions around their care. Being a nurse requires effective communications skills both verbal and non-verbal, I feel I have developed these skills significantly over my career. I am able to document accurate records and I am able to priorities tasks in a busy working environment.
I am looking for a new exciting opportunity to develop my skills further as a nurse and as a non medical prescriber.
