Core Skills/Competencies

• Abdominal Imaging - assessment of size, echotexture, position, patency and/or acoustic integrity of pancreas, aorta, liver, portal vein, intrahepatic biliary channel, common bile duct, gallbladder, right kidney, left kidney, spleen, urinary bladder and prostate Hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance scan Assessment for presence of fluid in abdomen or pelvis
• Obstetric ultrasound - scan for growth, fetal movement and wellbeing, liquor volume, Doppler (umbilical and middle cerebral arteries), anomaly scan, dating, nuchal translucency scan, placental localisation, cervical length check, fetal presentation, reassurance scan and early pregnancy viability scan Adhers to GAP and FASP guidelines on obstetrics
• Testicular Ultrasound - investigation of number, size, position, echopattern and viability of testicles, comparative study of testicles; check for hydrocele, varicocele, intra and extra-testicular lesions Torsion checks and prompt escalation if present In the presence of varicocele, kidneys scan performed
• Gynaecology or pelvic (Transabdominal) Sonography - scan for version/orientation of uterus, presence of fibroids, uterine size and myometrial homogeneity, endometrial scan and appearance/thickness correlation with phase of menstrual cycle, exclude polyps and other intracavitary lesions, cervix evaluation for Nabothian cysts or other pathologies; adnexal/ovarian scan to exclude morphological abnormalities and focal lesions including cysts or masses Adnexal images saved if ovaries not visible Pouch of Douglas free fluid excluded
• Transvaginal Scanning (TVS) - detailed gynaecology scan via vaginal approach with similar key checks and scan features as above; due to intimate and minimally invasive nature, TVS usually performed only when clinically indicated on females who have been sexually active
• Paediatric Ultrasound - all highlighted points under abdominal imaging including thorough check for appendicitis and mesenteric adenitis; follow up renal scan in case of prenatal diagnosis of hydronephrosis
• Renal Scan - for all patient groups for focused check of the kidneys, prostate, ureters and urinary bladder to exclude among others hydronephrosis, pyelonephritis, ureterocele, calculus, obstruction in the kidneys or urinary bladder To investigate cause of Haematuria, measure bladder wall thickness, check clearness of bladder content or regularity of bladder wall, measure bladder post-void volume and size of prostate
• Neck Ultrasound - Inhouse training is currently ongoing
