The unit consisted of 24 detox beds, 4 female, 6 chemical dependency and 14 alcohol with a total bed capacity of 140.
Admission was accepted on a 24/hour, 7 days a week basis, It was a very challenging work environment with only one qualified nurse on per shift.
As a Detox Nurse I was responsible for assessing and monitoring the physical and psychological withdrawal from alcohol/mood altering drugs.
Administering prescribed medication with the goal of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of residents while undergoing the detox process in conjunction with a visiting GP and members of the detox team.
I also had the additional responsibility of coordinated training for the MDT.

Home Base Crisis Team, North Cork Mental Health Services., I worked as part of the Multidisciplinary Team on the unit, where I was responsible for understanding patient care goals as voiced by the patient, making the patient a major part of his/her treatment and recovery.
I achieved this by utilizing strong nursing skills and holistic health knowledge as addiction was rarely the only treatment necessary.
I used interpersonal and group communication skills for one to one sessions and for group facilitation.
I facilitated three group sessions a week on the unit.
As a Staff Nurse I was responsible for introducing a quality initiative of near patient drug testing on the unit.
