I am Committed and part of an excellent team within the Trust
I live by our Trust values – upholding these and NMC code – demonstrated through my achievements Proud to achieve pastoral award our IENs have always had me as a direct point of contact and it is not an email address but a phone number for staff to contact. The role as pastoral facilitator have had to teach me in enhancing well-being, resilience in order to make my relationships with the international as it is influenced by the emotional consequences of personal, relational, or organisational demands of being in a new country with many challenging accepts of life. I have also join the wellbeing team in becoming a menopause ambassador in order support individuals in self-efficacy, internal motivation to cope and ability to respond confidently to challenging situations to prevent or reduce burnout.
I have been able to increase empathy and compassion, as it is a lived experience. I therefore fell that the RBCS course is very relevant to my job role and could be very useful for both myself on an individual bases but also in order to be able to support others.
In the last 18 months I have held the role of Pastoral support facilitator. At the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust as part of the international recruitment I work with the Nursing Workforce Lead and help to identifying ways of continuously improving the local international recruitment process and ensuring that the nurses have a positive experience of their journey from their countries of origin to the UK.
Due to the size of our Trust and being able to develop the role of pastoral support facilitator from infancy, it means that the role is very individualised to the nurse’s needs. I have continually learnt through engagement with our International nurses what they find beneficial to them during this whole process. Through feedback from the nurses they have stated that early contact with the trust and myself helped them with the transition and move to this country, the individualised support is never a set script, support and guidance is needed both on a personal and professional level.
I feel that it is vital for early engagement with the International nurses via the agency in order to get to know their needs and hopes and dreams as we understand the commitment to immigrate to the United Kingdom.
I have helped individuals develop an increased awareness of the importance of self-care and question organisational practices which impact negatively on staff (including their own) and patient wellbeing.
I have developed relationships with local estate agents to enable our International nurses to move out of Trust accommodation into local accommodation to enable their families/children to join their parent in the UK by supporting the IENs on viewings and really getting to have a trusting relationship with the individual agents
We have fantastic relationship with bank and post-office and have a vast experience an understanding of dealing with complex, confidential and sensitive information.
I have created a local guide for our International nurses, this started out as a 4 page document and this is now 98 pages long with all relevant information for our IENs. Which is send prior to arrival to the UK.
Vaccination of young children with nasal flu vaccines.
Traveling from School to school within Hertfordshire.
uring this time, I have been able to develop my inter-personal skills, being able to actively listen to patients and nursing staff to achieve joint goals As a nurse there is always an element of expect the unexpected therefore i am a quick thinker and good in a crisis managing to calm and defuse challenging situations
As a ward manager, I was in charge of the daily running of the ward, making sure that the ward was staffed and equipment available to the nurses On the sarcoma unit it was paramount that all nurses on the ward delivered an holistic approach to care, not only to the patients physical health, but also addressing their Psychological and emotional wellbeing As this could be a very challenging time for the individuals as well as their family, my negotiating skills have developed over this time, making sure that all were involved in the nursing process
