I started my NHS career in Maternity as a Midwife where I provided skilled, knowledgeable, respectful, and compassionate care for all women, newborn infants, and their families.
My role extended to become a teenage pregnancy midwife providing holistic and non-judgmental care, tailing antenatal care that supported each individual life circumstances, identifying additional services and helping young parents feel confident and learn the things they needed to know to give them the best possible positive start to parenthood.
I then completed further training and became a health visitor where I was working in the community, building relationships with families so their children could learn, thrive, and reach their full potential. I also had a responsibility to support families in reducing risks, protecting, and safeguarding children from harm. I undertook further training and completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education Level 6 and spent a period of time working in Higher Education so I could enhance my teaching skills and I was then successfully appointed as a Community Practice Teacher in health visiting achieving a masters qualification, within this role I was always a positive role model for community public health nursing students, and I always strived to ensure there was a nurturing learning environment and ensured that all learners had a positive experience. It was paramount that all students completing the SCPHN educational program under the guidance of myself demonstrated achievement of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards of Proficiency for (2022) SCPHN practice and my role and responsibility in that was to ensure that I facilitated the right learning environment.
I also held line manager responsibilities within this role for Practice Educator
SCPHN Health Visitor
Community nursery nurses and staff nurses within the team, completing 1:1 and appraisals, managing complaints and staff allegations in line with trust policies.
Through my career I have grown professionally in terms of my leadership skills and safeguarding knowledge and my passion for safeguarding women, babies, children, and families has led me to the position I have today.
I apply the core principles of safeguarding as part of my everyday role and responsibilities by embracing the foundations of working together to safeguard children and families by collaborative working. Protecting by applying measures to prevent further harm with a strength-based approach and applying cultural sensitivity, consider early intervention to prevent escalation of concerns and /or harm and to be accountable for delivering effective safeguarding.
My core values to safeguarding are always treating everyone with kindness, respect, and dignity.
To embrace collaborative working and strive to always achieve the best outcomes for women, babies, children, and vulnerable adults and to empower that everyone is always unique and advocate for holistic person-centered care.
I have completed a Level 5 supervision course that provided me with the foundations of being an exceptional safeguarding supervisor where my focus is to offer emotional and professional support that allows health professionals to embed the principles of safeguarding and empowering them to apply this in their everyday practice.
Allowing time for critical reflection with a focus on empowering health professionals to be professionally curious and confident to professionally challenge to ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals and maintaining accountability.
