I am currently working as a Trainee with the Scottish Drugs Forum (SDF) and undertaking a placement with DAPL, and I am approximately 70% through my SVQ qualification in health and social care. During this time I have completed a wide range of training which I feel directly benefits this role, including: Naloxone Training (including being trained to train others), Refugee Training, Building Self-Esteem in Recovery, Boundaries Training, Adult Support and Protection, Legislation relevant to the care sector, Anti-Discriminatory Practice, Managing Challenging Behaviour, Human Development Theories, Trauma and Substance Use, Online Understanding Stigma: Promoting Inclusive Attitudes and Practice, ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), Cocaine & other Psychostimulants: How Are Your Sites?, Overdose Prevention, Intervention and Naloxone, Hepatitis C and New Treatments, Contraception Information for People Who Use Drugs, What’s Happening on the Streets with Benzos?, Hepatitis B in Scotland, Motivational Interviewing in Brief Conversations, HIV: Preventable and Treatable, Bacterial Infections and Drug Use, LGBTQI+ Substance Use – An Introduction, Drug Awareness e-learning, Online Alcohol Awareness, Online Drug Awareness, and Bacterial Infections and Drug Use. Many of these courses are offered by SDF, which demonstrates a recognised standard of training in substance‐use, harm reduction and inclusive practice. Through my placement at DAPL I have been applying this training in real-life settings supporting individuals. I am especially drawn to working with people in temporary accommodation who are experiencing multiple challenges simultaneously, as I have a genuine and burning desire to help others, and I believe that the training and placement I have undertaken have provided me with the essential knowledge, skills and caring attitude to thrive in this role delivering compassionate, person-centred care and support.
I am deeply motivated to apply for the Housing Support Worker role because I believe strongly in the power of safe, stable accommodation as a foundation for positive life change. Having worked as a Trainee with the Scottish Drugs Forum (SDF) and currently placed at DAPL, I have seen first‐hand how people facing homelessness, substance use and other challenges can be helped to rebuild their lives when they are supported with dignity, respect and a person-centred approach. My training spanning areas such as trauma and substance use, building self-esteem in recovery, boundaries, anti-discriminatory practice and overdose prevention means I am well prepared to engage with individuals in temporary accommodation who are navigating complex needs. I am especially drawn to supporting people in temporary accommodation because it combines the practical aspects of tenancy support and housing stability with the human side of care and recovery, and I welcome the opportunity to bring my caring attitude, resilience and commitment into a role that can make a real difference to people’s lives.
