Michael Evans

I was given the opportunity to move into the telecommunications industry, where I gained extensive experience working on fibre infrastructure and network installations. My work primarily involved fibre spine projects, including pulling 25mm duct through the BT network using trailer winches and blowing fibre cable through the duct using specialist cable-blowing equipment.

I also carried out cable recovery using trailer winches, test rodding and AGG work to split and manage cabling. The role required accurate working practices, good knowledge of underground infrastructure and the ability to operate specialist equipment safely and efficiently.

I worked alongside a range of industry professionals and organisations, including MJ Quinn's, Openreach, local councils and traffic management teams. This provided valuable experience working within professional multi-contractor environments and to the required standards of major telecommunications projects.

During my time working within the telecommunications and fibre infrastructure industry, I gained a wide range of specialist training and industry-recognised tickets, including:

• Confined Spaces – safe working within confined environments.
• First Aid – workplace first-aid training.
• K006 – Heavy Cabling – experience working with heavy cabling within underground networks.
• SDMB5 – Cabling in Ducts – working safely and effectively with cabling in underground duct networks.
• K008 – Hand Rodding – hand rodding within underground telecommunications networks.
• K009 – Optical Fibre Cabling & Air Blowing – installation and air blowing of optical fibre cable.
• NRSWA Signing, Lighting & Guarding – safe working practices for highway works and traffic management.
• SA006 – Safe Working in Civil Engineering – safe working practices within civil engineering environments.

These qualifications and tickets have strengthened my technical knowledge, safety awareness and ability to work competently within busy construction, civil engineering and telecommunications environments. They have also enabled me to work effectively alongside other contractors, engineers, traffic-management teams and network professionals while maintaining high standards of safety and professionalism.

Following my experience running my own window fitting and maintenance business, I moved into deep drainage and groundworks, developing extensive experience in civil engineering and construction. My responsibilities included laying and installing drainage pipes, interpreting technical drawings and construction plans, and setting out my own levels and measurements to ensure work was completed accurately and to specification.

The role involved working closely with and directing heavy plant and machinery, as well as coordinating and supervising other workers on site. I also gained significant experience in setting out and constructing new roads and carrying out service trenching for electrical and telecommunications services.

My drainage experience covered a wide range of systems, including internal and external drainage, stormwater systems, foul drainage and associated underground services. This role further developed my technical knowledge, attention to detail, leadership, problem-solving and ability to work effectively within demanding construction environments.

I later went on to establish and run my own partnership window fitting company, providing a range of installation and property maintenance services. My responsibilities included fitting windows, doors and conservatories, as well as carrying out general maintenance and repair work.

Running my own business also gave me valuable experience in managing customers, organising work, working to deadlines and resolving problems effectively. Dealing with challenging customer situations helped me develop strong communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills, while maintaining a professional and reliable approach at all times. This experience also strengthened my ability to work independently, take responsibility and manage the day-to-day demands of running a business.

As a residential childcare worker my role was supporting young people aged 13–18, helping them develop the skills and confidence needed to prepare for independent living. My role involved providing day-to-day support and guidance, including teaching practical life skills such as cooking, supporting education and encouraging positive routines and personal development.

I also organised and supported trips and activities, helping young people build confidence, develop positive relationships and strengthen their social skills through shared experiences with other young people. The role required patience, empathy, communication and the ability to build trusting and supportive relationships with young people.

Alongside my practical experience, I gained a Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care, further developing my knowledge and understanding of supporting young people and promoting their wellbeing, development and independence.

Alongside my main employment, I also worked evenings as a bartender at a local pub. This role gave me valuable experience dealing with a wide range of customers and strengthened my communication, interpersonal and customer service skills. Working in a busy environment also developed my ability to remain professional under pressure, work effectively as part of a team and provide a friendly, positive experience for customers.

After leaving school, I began my career with this property development company, where I gained valuable hands-on experience across a variety of trades. I developed practical skills in plumbing, tiling, carpentry and basic electrical work, giving me a strong understanding of construction, maintenance and property development. These early experiences provided me with a solid practical foundation and valuable problem-solving skills that I have continued to use and build upon throughout my career.

I worked as a Youth Worker, gaining valuable experience supporting and working with young people from a range of backgrounds. During this time, I developed strong communication, listening and interpersonal skills, while learning how to build positive relationships and provide appropriate support and guidance. Alongside my practical experience, I successfully gained a Level 3 qualification in Youth Work. This experience provided me with a strong foundation and helped me progress into the childcare sector, where I was able to further develop my skills and experience working with children.
