I have undertaken a clinical attachment in Acute Medicine. It has provided me an insight into the working of an NHS setting.
My main duties in the Acute Medicine Ward, A&E and SDEC Clinics were:
●I have observed a wide array of hospital cases, delving into their diagnosis and management protocols. These encompass conditions such as Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Liver Failure, Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), Urosepsis, Alcohol Withdrawal, Infected Ulcers, Hospital and Community-Acquired Pneumonia, COVID Pneumonia, Heart Failure, Motor Neuron Disease (MND), Septic Arthritis, and more.
●Demonstrating my understanding and active engagement with other healthcare workers for which I gave a Presentation on Hyperkalaemia in the Hospital Medical Education Department.
●Observing consultations and participating in case discussions. Participating in patient administration, patient clerking and taking history.
●Accompanying ward rounds, examinations and observing completion of daily doctor notes, making of daily plan for each patient and observing implementation of the plan.
●Familiarizing myself well with hospital computer system to check hospital guidelines and observing how doctors use up to date blood, cardiac and radiology reports to decide plan of care and observing how to make e-discharge and e-referral.
●Observing procedures such as IV cannulation, blood sampling, lumbar punctures and biopsies.
●Observing Fast Tracking, Palliative and End of life care and Breaking Bad news, relatives counseling including telephonic conversations.
●Getting an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of different team members such as doctors, nurses, porters, physiotherapists, Phlebotomists, Tissue Viability Nurses, Specialist Nurses, OPAT team, technicians, PA's and Houseworkers working to provide the common goal of high quality patient care.

General Surgery Rotation:
•Within the General Surgery department, I operated under supervision, assisting in surgical procedures, conducting preoperative evaluations, and providing postoperative care. Responsibilities included patient assessments, wound care management, and participation in ward rounds and clinics.
Orthopaedics Rotation:
•In the Orthopaedics department, I engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of related conditions. This involved assisting in surgeries related to bones, joints, and soft tissue injuries, alongside managing outpatient consultations and contributing to fracture clinics.
Medicine Rotation:
•During the Medicine rotation, my duties were in Ward, Outpatient and A&E. I provided comprehensive patient care, including conducting assessments, formulating treatment plans, and monitoring the progress of individuals with various medical conditions under senior supervision. Active participation in ward rounds, case discussions, and collaborating with senior medical staff were integral aspects of this role.
Psychiatry Experience:
•Within Psychiatry, I gained insight into mental health assessments, treatment modalities, and patient management strategies. I participated in psychiatric evaluations, observed therapeutic interventions, and contributed to care plans for individuals with diverse mental health concerns.
Throughout these rotations, I diligently adhered to hospital protocols, demonstrated effective communication with patients and multidisciplinary teams, and continuously sought learning opportunities to enhance my medical knowledge and clinical skills.
