During my observership at the Ketamine Clinic at King’s College London, I had the invaluable opportunity to observe and participate in the care of patients with severe depression or bipolar disorder. The clinic provided tertiary care by administering ketamine therapy to patients with treatment-resistant depression or bipolar disorder. I observed various mental health professionals, including psychiatrists and psychotherapists, use the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) to assess the severity of patients' symptoms, as well as administer ketamine therapy. Additionally, I had the opportunity to collaborate with the mental health team to discuss patients' medical and psychiatric histories. I also observed electroconvulsive therapy sessions for patients experiencing suicidal ideation. This experience offered me valuable insights into interacting and communicating with highly vulnerable individuals. Given that it was a tertiary care clinic, I had ample time to engage with different patients and understand their personal stories.
- Interpersonal skills - My year abroad in Amsterdam exposed me to social situations where I was required to be able to communicate effectively to solve any problems that I experienced I was able to quickly adapt to a different culture and a different language in order to be able to create meaningful relationships and gain a wider and deeper appreciation of different cultures
- Bilingual - As someone of Turkish ethnic origin, I am fluent in both Turkish and English This gives me the ease to understand and empathise with individuals from both of these cultures I can understand and empathise with the problems and struggles that individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds may face
- Activity planning skills - My volunteering work at Mentor Wise involves planning activities for my group of youth These activities are planned accordingly to build team work and develop social connections For example, I have been a part of the planning committee for organising reading retreats, day-trips and many more
- Adaptable to work under pressure - As an individual with multiple responsibilities tied to my volunteering life and student life, I have learned the ability to be able to prioritise tasks based on urgency and importance This has consequently allowed me to manage my time more effectively and meet deadlines
- Empathy - I believe that as a psychologist, developing empathy is a skill that is necessary to develop This is the reason I explore different opportunities to broaden my horizons and expose myself to different ways of life and different ways of perceiving the world This was one of the main reasons I made the decision to take a year abroad to Amsterdam, to give myself the opportunity to have those experiences with different types of individuals
