I currently work at Trinity First School , for the last 7 or so years as an Elsa and before that as a TA in every year group from Reception to Yr 4 supporting a little girl with Downs Syndrome. My day to day is spent planning and preparing sessions tailored to suit children with various emotional and behaviour difficulties. The aim of an Elsa is to provide and help enhance a good learning experience through the nurture principles, to promote self esteem and confidence by developing a knowledge of the particular needs of the child with help and advice from the Class Teacher, Senco and Parents.
Each day is different, and I plan my sessions and gather resources each week using a wide variety of sources, including my local Elsa supervision group run by an Educational Psychologist. I can be dealing with a child who has anger management issues or a child who is suffering the effects of marital breakdown/abuse within the home or a child who is just in need of a little self belief.
I am responsible for creating and maintaining my own records and files in accordance with the Senco and of-course, all in complete confidentiality. At times, I am also required to complete My Concern forms if any there are any disclosures.
For three afternoons a week I am based within the classroom and help with various TA tasks including a reading intervention currently.
I have also just begun a Parenting Class with the Deputy Head which is based on the Solihull Approach and this is for invited parents and those that feel that they might benefit from some form of extra support.
I also run the wraparound after school club, Trinity Plus, which provides after school care until 5.30pm daily. We run sessions on arts/crafts, gym and outdoor play and provide a snack.
