  • As an acting DPH , I am responsible of delivery of the statutory and non-statutory functions of Public Health for Dudley Council
  • I lead a team of 112 employees across Public Health , Emergency Planning , Health Intelligence , Commissioning , Environmental Health and Trading Standards and Public Health training scheme
  • I line manage eight senior colleagues and accountable of the PH grant
  • I led the Public Health department through the transition to live with COVID , identifying and embedding COVID learning, revisiting the department’s vision and guiding principles and identifying priorities , key performance indicators and risks
  • I consolidated COVID learning and legacy in the DPH annual report 2022 titled COVID 19; Looking Back and Moving Forward
  • Selected achievements:
  • I led the development and implementation of an umbrella of projects to reduce demand on Adult Social Care which encompassed falls prevention , health and wellbeing offer in care homes , targeted and outreach vaccination programme for older people including improving access to pneumococcal vaccine for people with COPD and reducing loneliness and isolation
  • I led the evaluation of the previous Health and Wellbeing Board ( HWB) strategy and the development of the new system wide Dudley HWB and Inequality strategy
  • It included action plans and high level dashboards to monitor system progress
  • Developing a system wide vertical approach to reducing the inequality gap in one of the most deprived wards in Dudley .This encompasses looking at strengthening the link between primary care and communities through adopting community development and assets based approaches and empowering communities to have stronger role in reducing inequalities and working in effective partnership with communities to address wicked problems such as childhood obesity I oversaw the development and the implementation of Borough wide 10 years Financial Wellbeing and Poverty Strategy with three main components; long term preventing poverty , intermediate term supporting people out of poverty and short term ;mitigating the impact of poverty with delivery and monitoring plans I Mainstreamed the process of developing the Joint Strategic Needs assessment ( JSNA) to ensure it can be used to support planning across health, social care and the third sector , resulting in the development two tired approaches to the JSNA; basic socio-demographic and thematic JSNA
  • I led the procurement of Public Health services ( 17 contracts ) ; I established and chaired the Commissioning Board and governance framework
  • To ensure value for money and service synergy number of contracts were amalgamated into related bundles
  • The process covered the whole commissioning cycle from assessing needs , national and regional benchmarking financial and outcomes information to be able to set a competitive and affordable financial envelopes to contract award and mobilisation
  • To execute the scrutiny and challenge role of the DPH more effectively , I oversaw the development of a system wide health protection strategy and a standard reporting format to the Health Protection Board , that I chair
  • As the lead for emergency planning I chaired the Council Incident Management Group ( IMG)
  • I oversaw the development of an electroclinic system of checklist to mainstream business community plans across the Council
  • I also chair the system wide winter planning group to scrutinise and challenge winter preparedness across the Council and the NHS I supported the Local Resilience Forum during the repatriation of British Sudanese due to war in Sudan by mobilising local communities to help and support repatriates
  • I chaired the Black Country ICB Prevention and Personalisation Network leading the network to adopt innovative approaches to prevention such as developing effective Public Private Partnerships to strengthen the role of the private sector in prevention , having a stronger focus on prevention of hospital admission as a means of managing demand on health and social care and using mental wellbeing and emotional resilience as a foundation for health improvement interventions
  • Worked with Children Social care to include Public Health outcomes in the Family Safeguarding project and support the evaluation of the project
  • I oversaw supporting adult social care in improving audit standards , completing audits and staff training
  • I oversaw linking learning from adult safeguarding reviews to healthy ageing agenda , loneliness and isolation and fraud protection
  • In my efforts to have a stronger focus on the wider determinants of health I oversaw the development of a health and housing programme and secured buy in from the NHS I oversaw Public Health input in the climate change agenda , supporting community engagement and behavioural change
  • I had a strong focus on health in all policies ensuring that health perspectives are included in planning , transport and housing
  • I worked closely with the NHS; oversaw the development of the annual Core Offer to the place based ICB and agreed areas of mutual priorities and support

  • Led the development of a system wide approach to addressing loneliness and isolation with number of work streams , this has evolved into a network where charities and community groups have a leading role in embedding interventions to improve social connectedness across the system

  • I co-authored a clinical leadership course for developing countries. The course focused on personal effectiveness and system leadership to improve quality and strengthen the health improvement and the primary prevention roles of clinicians in developing countries. Voluntary roles Chair of the Sudan Interest Group (SIG-Sudan) of the Faculty of Public Health; I have been chairing the SIG-Sudan since 2017. It is voluntary group of FPH members and fellows that aims to build public health capacity in Sudan and developing countries . The group also supports integration of black and ethnic minority communities in the UK . The group played an instrumental role in raising awareness of COVID prevention and increasing the uptake of COVID vaccine among BAME communities in the UK . Developer and presenter, Radio BBC Arabic; I worked with Radio BBC Arabic to develop and present health promotion messages from March 2021 until the Radio service was decommissioned in April 2023. Messages were broadcasted in the morning show with 8-9 million Arabic speaking listeners around the globe.
