Work history

Mechanical design technician

Cummins
Huddersfield
2020.09 - Current

I began at Cummins as an apprentice and was chosen to be the first apprentice within the turbocharger testing facilities mechanical design team. Prior to joining, i had little to no engineering experience. Despite that, due to an adaptable nature and willingness to learn I soon found my feet and have become a key member of the team. Some of my personal highlights and skills gained from my time at Cummins include:

  • Gaining professional accreditation in CAD software (Creo parametric 3D modelling). Significant improvement in CAD skills has allowed rapid reaction to customer demands whilst maintaining clear drawings that adhere to company standards.
  • Creative design solutions. For example using 3D printing to produce a fixture with complex geometry to attach to a water-mist system to allow testing. This ensures all heads fire as expected in case of a fire and also allows regular system flushed reducing the risk of Legionella.
  • Communicate effectively with all project stakeholders and liaise with suppliers to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Building good relationships with lab technicians, engineers and suppliers allowing valuable input from others.
  • Query technical information if I believe something may be incorrect and also provide technical advice to others.
  • Significant improvements in CAD data storage by applying a continuous improvement mindset, allowing components/drawings resulting in less time wasted searching for parts.
  • Awareness of CDM regulations hazard identification, risk management and safe design solutions.
  • Working in cross functional teams to deliver projects on time.

Customer assistant

Tesco
Huddersfield
2020.02 - 2022.04

Guided customers in selecting products that matched their needs and preferences, ensuring a positive shopping experience.

  • Building rapport with customers by being friendly, helpful and easy to engage.
  • Managed high-stress situations while maintaining quality customer service.
  • Developed confidence and enhanced people skills through face-to-face interactions with customers at Tesco. I worked there during the Covid lock-downs, which was very challenging. It meant i had to be empathetic whilst also being firm at enforcing health and safety measures. We would often be short-staffed due to illness so it could also be a high-pressure role where i would need to work efficiently, whilst also maintaining a high level of customer service.
