I acted in a hybrid role where I provide both technical and product direction to teams that I work with, rather than being a 'pure' Product Manager. In this role I was very hands-on and aimed to provide expert guidance as well as mentorship to Engineers, ensuring that they have everything they need to deliver great features and results (as well as enjoy themselves along the way).

  • Oversaw significant platform rewrite and product pivot from "Bring Your Own Account" to "Fully Hosted" that took place over 8 months. Lead to 3000% uptick in trial activity and now represents over 25% of Couchbase's revenue.

This role involved ensuring that all applications and customer databases (deployed on Kubernetes) were reliable in accordance with SLAs.

Served as lead escalation point within Couchbase Cloud for any service-impacting events.

Key Achievements

  • Co-architected from-scratch rewrite of cluster deployment and automation, reducing overall TCO of individual databases by up to 35% and reducing database spin-up time from 35 minutes to less than 3 minutes.
  • Led team of Engineers focussed on database health and monitoring, delivering comprehensive custom Prometheus exporter as well as automated SRE and Support tooling to debug customer clusters with appropriate privilege escalation approval (replacing manual SSH and scripts); latter allowing Couchbase Cloud to achieve SOC II Type 2 compliance.

  • Setup and led a worldwide technical mentorship program for the Support team, giving individuals a platform to discuss issues in a personal setting.
  • One of 4 Engineering recipients of 2019 and 2022 Couchbase President's Club award for outstanding performance.
  • Led, created content for, and presented 2 week intensive in-person bootcamp for 9 Support new hires that had 100% satisfaction survey results.
  • Created innovative log analysis platform that increased Support efficiency by 30% (equivalent to 7 headcount) and continues to foster increased collaboration across the company, written in Python, Bootstrap, and VueJS, running on Kubernetes.
  • Created 2 conference keynote demos that continue to be used to demonstrate Couchbase today.
  • Setup new ticket triaging process to optimise time spent by Support Engineers investigating detailed cases and resolving issues. This resulted in an average of 35% of cases being resolved prior to deep investigation by an Engineer (e.g. idle cases, simple documentation examples etc), greatly improving efficiency and engineer satisfaction.
  • Most individual tickets solved per month for 34 out of 36 months.
