  • I was working within the Generic Tissue Bank department at The Royal Marsden Hospital, developing a Bio-bank depository of patient samples that can be used for future research.
  • I was the Primary contact of the Tissue Bank team across both sites for single & multicentre studies.
  • I managed interactions with multiple teams and create and adapt processes to deliver a varied portfolio ensuring the best outcome for the Bio-bank and the team.
  • Daily duties included collecting and processing clinical samples, from multiple units and sites across The Royal Marsden, The Institute of Cancer Research and other external sites.
  • Accurately recording and keeping track of each patient's sample on our tracking system FreezerPro Enterprise was also an essential part of my role.
  • I ensured that the principals of the Human Tissue Act (HTA) and Good Clinical Practise (GCP) were upheld at all times and that samples have appropriate patient consent.
  • I interpreted pathology data to identify samples for inclusion in the Bio-bank.
  • Sample collection was then organised and co-ordinated by liaising with clinicians, surgeons, research nurses, pathologists and laboratory staff.
  • I dispatched samples to collaborators by following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ethically approved protocols and material transfer agreements.
  • I also wrote some departmental SOPs and guidance documents.
  • My team was involved in the processing and co-ordination of research projects such as the 100,000 Genome project.
  • We liaised with the Molecular Diagnostics and Histopathology laboratories for processing and testing these samples and communicated with Research teams to identify potential patients.
  • I was responsible of monitoring the Freezer facilities across both hospital sites, which included the maintenance of the centrifuges and freezers in the facilities.
  • I also monitored the liquid nitrogen facility and I was liquid nitrogen trained to decant nitrogen from our low pressure vessel.
  • I was competent to snap freeze fresh tissue samples for future research and have consented patients for storage of these samples in the Bio-bank.
