Work History

Cabinet member: Homelessness & Regulatory Services

Buckinghamshire Council
Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire
05.2022 - Current
  • Spearheaded the successful implementation of the very first county wide Buckinghamshire Housing strategy. This identified actions we would take to help overcome the issues in finding an affordable home in the county.
  • Introduced to the whole housing team the need to undertake a comprehensive Housing Improvement programme that would improve the service for our customers and staff.
  • I took a prominent role in the housing improvement programme that identified the changes in policy, processes and behaviours which would need to implement to improve the service for both our customers and staff.
  • Guided through council and cabinet a new Housing allocations policy that changed the qualification period to our housing list and the priority banding to take account of our housing pressures and new legislation. Pushed that housing should be allocated on a county rather than as previously a district basis.
  • Led the successful communication through the council of the improvements we were making to homelessness provision, how we were managing to control costs and the innovations we were taking to ensure people were moved on to permanent accommodation more quickly.
  • Pushing the housing team to innovate to take advantage of trends such as buy to rent and changes in Government policy.
  • Showed that I could successfully communicate to council the public and the media on often difficult and complex issues always ensuring that the council was presented in the best possible light.

Deputy Cabinet Member: Homelessness

Buckinghamshire Council
Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire
04.2020 - 06.2022
  • Provided expertise from my previous experience as Cabinet member in AVDC on homelessness during the period of everyone in during the pandemic. Establishing myself as a respected authority on the area within council.
  • Introduced the first county wide homelessness and rough sleeper strategy working with stakeholders to deliver and implement a strategy to identify how we would work to prevent homelessness and to try and virtually eliminate rough sleeping.
  • Ensure I fully understood the problem of rough sleeping I have taken part in three rough sleeper counts two in Aylesbury and one in High Wycombe. This really brought home to me the issue of rough sleeping and the practical problems in solving complex personal issues often involving a mixture of mental health, addiction and a record of criminal offending.

Recruitment consultant

Morgan Thomas Recruitment

  • set up and implemented marketing strategies that set out where and how we would recruit suitable staff for each role.
  • Screened each suitable applicant for the role and speak to them to ensure they were aware what was involved in the role before passing them to our client for interview.
  • Role and business was curtailed by lockdown.

Cabinet member housing, homelessness & Community

Aylesbury Vale District Council
Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire
06.2018 - 04.2020
  • Introduced through a politicised council a housing and homelessness strategy. My emphatic approach ensured that the strategy was unanimously supported across the chamber.
  • I identified that we had built lots of affordable housing but barely any of it at the social rented level. Through my personal initiative we used Section 106 funding and right to buy receipts to grant funding 61 homes in 18 months at the social rented level.
  • Increased my learning of the voluntary sector such as Woman's Aid and the local police to ensure I had a full understanding of the issues involved in domestic abuse and ASB. This led to local initiatives to improve the training of housing staff and locally I championed the use of a closure order through the police on a property where the occupants had been terrorising their neighbours and most of the local area and had failed to abide by any warnings.
