Primarily a litigator mainly civil with some regulatory defence work in the Magistrates court, began to do some commercial property in combination with the corporate partner; was the leader in seeing the firm spread its range of work.

initially an assistant solicitor in a two partner firm that was a high street firm run from an office block in Birmingham City Centre. Criminal and matrimonial litigation was a member of the Birmingham Duty Solicitor scheme. Began to take an interest in commercial law. Became an equity partner in 1985 and lobbied strongly for the firm to merge with a larger firm in 1988.
