In recognition of the exceptional efforts of our palliative care team at the North West Cancer Center (NWCC) and the quality of service they provide to our patients, I successfully finalized the application for ESMO accreditation.
As a result, NWCC has been accredited as an ESMO Designated Center of Integrated Oncology and Palliative Care for the period 2025-2027.
This prestigious accreditation acknowledges our commitment to excellence in palliative care and positions us as a leader in the field.
The official announcement and award ceremony took place in Barcelona, Spain, during the ESMO Congress, providing international recognition of our achievements.
As a dedicated member of the Clinical Oncology Department at Assiut University, I played an integral role in establishing a nutrition unit for oncology patients, particularly those with head and neck tumors, before the commencement of CCRTH. This initiative was part of our broader efforts to enhance the palliative care unit and has since led to the creation of a unique and comprehensive palliative care clinic that stands out in Upper Egypt.
Our goal was to improve the quality of life and treatment outcome for these patients through tailored nutritional support.
Being part of the project, the steps of establishment included:
1. Initial Planning and Collaboration: The establishment of the nutrition unit required meticulous planning and collaboration with various stakeholders, including oncologists, dietitians, nurses, and hospital administrators. We conducted a thorough needs assessment to understand the specific nutritional challenges faced by our patients.
2. Designing the Unit: We designed the nutrition unit to provide comprehensive services, including nutritional assessments, individualized diet plans, and counseling. The unit was equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to support the preparation and administration of specialized diets.
3. Training and Development: To ensure the effectiveness of the nutrition unit, we invested in the training and development of our staff. Dietitians received specialized training in oncology nutrition, focusing on the unique needs of head and neck tumor patients. Our team also participated in workshops and seminars to stay updated on the latest advancements in the field.
4. Implementation and Integration: The implementation phase involved integrating the nutrition unit into the existing palliative care framework.
This role has been a significant opportunity to develop and showcase my leadership and organizational skills while contributing to the advancement of clinical oncology on an international stage.
My role included:
1. Planning and Coordination: My responsibilities involved meticulous planning and coordination of various conference activities. This included collaborating with fellow committee members to set the conference agenda, identifying and inviting keynote speakers, and ensuring that all logistical arrangements were in place.
2. Speaker and Participant Management: One of my key roles was to manage communications with invited speakers and participants.
3. On-Site Management: During the conference, I oversaw on-site management, ensuring that all sessions ran smoothly, addressing any issues promptly, and coordinating with volunteers and support staff.
4. Post-Conference Activities: Post-conference, I was involved in gathering feedback from participants, analyzing the success of the conference, and identifying areas for improvement.
Background: Previously, photos of medical issues such as skin toxicities were stored only in patient paper files, making them inaccessible for follow-up consultations, especially during out-of-hours (OOH) consultations. This limitation hindered timely and accurate management of patient conditions.
Initiative: To address this issue, I collaborated with the PACS system manager to create a clear and secure pathway for uploading these medical photographs into the PACS system.
This initiative involved:
- Coordination with IT and PACS Managers: Working closely with the PACS system manager to ensure the technical feasibility of uploading and storing medical photos within the existing system infrastructure.
- Development of Protocols: Establishing protocols to ensure that the process of uploading photos adheres to patient confidentiality data and data protection regulations. Outcome: The integration of medical photos into the PACS system will significantly improve the accessibility of these images to the entire medical team.
- This enhancement allows for accurate and timely management of medical issues, particularly during OOH consultations, without compromising patient confidentiality. As a result of the success of this project, the trust expands this initiative to hospitals of the trust, not only NWCC, and will pass to encompass.

- Methodological Expertise: Gaining a good foundation in research methodologies, including study design, data collection, statistical analysis, and interpretation of results. This has enabled me to contribute effectively to the planning and execution of research projects.
- Clinical Trial Involvement: Recently joining a clinical trial team after successfully completing the Good Clinical Practice (GCP) course in NWCC. This certification has equipped me with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct clinical trials ethically and in compliance with international standards.
- Collaboration and Networking: Working closely with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, clinicians, and academics, fostering a collaborative environment that enhances the quality and impact of research outcomes.
- Publication and Dissemination: Contributing to the publication of research findings in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at national and international conferences. This has helped in disseminating knowledge and advancing the field of oncology.

Methods: We reviewed the clinical data of patients with locally advanced rectal cancer treated at the Clinical Oncology Department of Assiut University Hospital between January 2009 and December 2013. Included were 70 patients who all received neo-adjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy followed by radical surgery. A 2D planning system by conventional X-ray simulation was used with the patient in a prone position, with radiation delivered by linear accelerator (SIEMENS PRIMUS Linear Accelerator) with energy at 15Mev. A total radiation dose of 5040 cGy and fraction size of 180 cGy, was used 5 times per week for 6 weeks concurrently with 5FU 400mg/m2 IV bolus+ leucovorin 20mg/m2 IV bolus from days 1-4 during weeks 1 and 5 of radiotherapy or use of capecitabine 825mg/m2 twice daily concurrently with radiation from days 1-5 and repeat cycle weekly for 5 weeks.
