As a part of my college course I completed a week long placement at a hospital shadowing midwives, maternity support workers and sonographers on antenatal postnatal, ultrasound and maternity triage wards. During this I:
- Communicated professionally and compassionately with patients, their families and healthcare workers
- Gained and understanding of how important compassionate and person centred care is within midwifery
- Observed routine checks and clinical procedures
- Developed and understanding of infection prevention control
- Deepened my understanding of the importance of the role of midwives in empowering women throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period
- Gained teamwork skills through observing how the multidisciplinary team worked together to provide safe and effective care
- Gained insight into patients emotional and physical needs during vulnerable situations and how to preserve their dignity whilst doing this
I also completed work experience at a residential care home shadowing carers, during this I learned many new skills from observing and completing tasks including:
- Observing personal care
- Gaining an understanding of how to effectively communicate with patients with dementia, alzheimers and other conditions effecting memory, mental and physical health and how to care for residents using a person centred approach while preserving their dignity.
- Communicating with residents clearly, slowly and professionally
- Assisting with feeding residents, dressing residents and assisting with other daily activities
