This position involved managing my own area and time, while working alongside the other members of the management team. It also involved ensuring that we deliver a great service to our customers. A big part of my role was to be responsible for any items or parcels that needed to go to a customer, ensuring they were sent to the customers in good condition, that they were receiving what they ordered, and that they were receiving good customer service from the delivering driver. Speaking to and having interactions with customers, whether it is through phone, email, or in person, is another significant part of being a goods on hold clerk; most interactions with customers occur due to them receiving their parcel or purchase, and having items missing, or receiving a damaged item. One of my responsibilities was to amend that issue and ensure the customer received what they needed, whether it was locating the missing item. However, the position of a Goods on Hold Clerk also involved security management and a high level of attention to ensure that missing items are accounted for, missing contents are located on time, and if there are any forms of suspicious activity, to act immediately but efficiently, without jumping to conclusions and without over-comprehending situations.

  • I worked for DPD as a Warehouse Operative for almost two years. In the time that I had spent being there, I managed to successfully pick up quite a few new skills, such as the ability to work better within a team, the capability to work well in a fast-paced environment, and keeping up to date with what is happening at any current moment.
  • During my time at DPD, I was able to improve my communication skills, especially in a customer context. Some of these communication skills include increased attentiveness, a more assured attitude towards customer responses, and effective engagement in conversations and discussions. This has led to a better understanding of how I should communicate within a team.
  • I have been able to understand how much more important it is to take care of yourself and the team within the area, especially under circumstances where we needed to be moving at a fast, but efficient, pace to ensure we achieve the goals that are required of us. Health and Safety is another aspect of which I have been able to gain a greater understanding, especially from having to learn so many different safe general practices and then put them in place to keep everyone around me safe.
  • Carried out day-to-day warehouse duties with care and attention, maintaining compliance with safety standards.
  • Maintained cleanliness and organisation in the warehouse to support a safe working environment.
