I worked on 3 surgical wards during my time at the Hampshire clinic in Basingstoke. Loddon ward covered orthopaedic surgeries, Lyde 1 ward catered for elective daycase and inpatient surgeries and Lyde 2 was a ward that specialised in looking after patients recovering from major colorectal cancer surgeries.
My duties mainly centred around admitting and triaging patients pre-op, preparing them for their operation by making sure all pre-op investigations had taken place, the appropriate paper work had been completed and was in place.
My post-op my duties involved receiving patients from recovery/ITU, effective pain relief, wound management, drain monitoring post-op in addition to accurate fluid balance documentation. However, when working on the more specialist ward, staff were trained to use and maintain central lines, remove central lines using the trundleberg method, Providing nutrition intravenously (TPN), epidurals, removal of drains, NG insertion.
