Spinal Surgery Advanced Nurse Practitioner

  • Clerking and discharging of spinal surgery patients
  • Triaging referrals into the spinal service
  • Responsible for prioritising patient care, surgery and booking theatre lists
  • Reviewing patients that have been added to the surgical waiting list. Identifying investigations and further imaging that would be required.
  • Co-ordination and implementing spinal pre-assessment day
  • Communicating and working alongside key members of the spinal MDT such as; Anaesthetists, General Paediatricians, Intensivists, Respiratory, Cardiology, OT/Physios and Psychology
  • Review of complex deteriorating spinal patients on the ward
  • High Dependency nursing skills including tracheostomy ventilators, non-invasive ventilators, arterial lines and complex wound care.
  • Lead wound care management for all post operative patients. Able to provide complex wound care such as VAC dressings, VERAFLO VAC and PICO's.
  • Implementing education at a ward based level up to university credited modules regarding spinal surgery and wound care.
  • ANP lead clinics reviewing post operative spinal patients.
  • Supporting patients and families throughout the spinal surgery pathway. Providing a constant access to clinical advice via email, telephone or text.
  • Meeting weekly with senior service management to discuss PTL within the spinal service.
  • Working closely with the Head of Nursing addressing complex complaints and service improvements.
  • Staff management - responsible for the spinal pathway co-ordinator which includes appraisals, off duty and mentoring.
  • Working alongside the MDT for the implementation of ERAS 'enhanced recovery programme' to reduce post operative admissions utilising pain relief and gastric cover.
