I support the physical, emotional, and social well-being of students within the educational setting. My role involves promoting a safe and healthy school environment through direct care, supporting immunisation programmes, and managing chronic health conditions. I play a key role in health education and disease prevention, while also working closely with families and teachers where there are concerns about behaviour, attendance, or well-being. By connecting families with community health resources and offering tailored support, I enable students to participate fully in their learning and achieve their full potential.
As a school nurse in the 0-19 Torbay Plus Team ,my role is to provide support to vulnerable children, young people and their families assessing their risk of harm, abuse, neglect or exploitation ensuring safeguarding policies and procedures are followed within the healthcare setting. My responsibilities include acting as a first point of contact where a concern has been raised and escalating those concerns appropriately through safeguarding pathways. I work closely with other agencies and colleagues to ensure a coordinated approach to safeguarding children by attending meetings, case conferences as well as strategy discussions to contribute to the development of plans to improve the outcomes for vulnerable families whilst advocating for the well being of those most at risk. My role requires me to be competent at maintaining accurate contemporaneous records, ensuring timely documentation and communication as well as preparing reports and statements for investigations and legal proceedings when required.
My role as a prison nurse was to provide healthcare services within a secure environment, ensuring that individuals in custody receive high-quality, evidence based care while addressing the unique challenges within the prison setting. My responsibilities were to assess, diagnose and manage a range of physical health conditions as well as delivering emergency care when required and responding to medical incidents as well as administering medications and treatments as prescribed. Working within the multi-disciplinary team I participated in care planning and risk assessments for prisoners with complex needs including autism and ADHD within the constraints of a secure setting whilst maintaining professional nursing standards.

I am writing to express my interest in the Autism Assessor training position within your organisation. As a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (School Nursing) with extensive experience in child health, safeguarding, and developmental assessment, I am passionate about supporting neurodivergent children and am eager to transition into a more specialised role in autism and ADHD assessment. Throughout my nursing career, I have worked across diverse settings including schools, sexual health services, community nursing, and prison healthcare developing a strong foundation in observing, identifying, and responding to complex emotional and developmental needs. In my current role within school nursing, I work closely with children and families, often those most vulnerable, coordinating care, compiling reports for safeguarding and legal processes, and working collaboratively with education, social care, and health professionals. This has strengthened my clinical judgement, observational skills, and ability to communicate sensitively across multidisciplinary settings all essential qualities for autism assessment. My interest in neurodevelopmental conditions has grown steadily through my work with children and adolescents presenting with autism, ADHD, and complex trauma. I am particularly attuned to the nuanced presentations of neurodivergence and the challenges families face in navigating support systems. I am experienced in trauma-informed practice, recognising how trauma, adverse childhood experiences, and unmet needs can impact a child's behaviour and development, sometimes masking or complicating a diagnosis. In previous roles including within the secure estate and have seen first-hand the consequences of undiagnosed neurodivergent conditions. Research and personal experience highlight the overrepresentation of individuals with autism, ADHD, and learning differences within the criminal justice system. This insight has further fuelled my commitment to early identification and timely, compassionate intervention.
I am also highly motivated to undertake further training relevant to autism and neurodevelopmental assessment, including the ADOS or other structured diagnostic tools. I view this opportunity as a natural next step in my professional journey combining my clinical expertise, safeguarding lens, and dedication to equity in healthcare. I believe I bring a unique perspective to this role, grounded in person-centred care, developmental insight, and a systemic understanding of how neurodivergence intersects with education, social care, and mental health. I would welcome the chance to contribute to your services mission of delivering accurate, empathetic assessments that empower children and their families.
