I am a highly motivated individual currently working as a social therapist/HCA in an acute psychiatric ward in Newham. I have a number of years experience working in different health and social care settings, including residential care, EMI nursing homes and acute mental health inpatient care. I am currently in the process of relocating from London to Leeds, and am therefore exploring new job opportunities. I hold an enhanced DBS certificate, on the update service.

In this job role I have worked as part of the nursing team in an acute psychiatric ward for adult males. The patients suffered from a number of psychiatric conditions, such as paranoid schizophrenia. personality disorders and bipolar disorder. I also gained experience of working with patients with autism and learning difficulties who present with challenging and aggressive behaviours at times. My roles and responsibilities in this job role have included:

  • Building a good therapeutic rapport with the patients on the ward to assist towards successful therapy outcomes
  • Engaging in regular 1:1 discussions with patients to ascertain any needs, to talk through any problems they are having and to promote recovery
  • Facilitating patients to utilise their section 17 leave to assist with their rehabilitation into the community
  • Assisting with group activities on the ward to keep patients occupied and encourage a positive culture on the ward
  • Supported patients in developing coping mechanisms, fostering resilience during challenging times.
  • Engaging directly with patients during times of crisis to offer support and reassurance
  • Directly intervening when patients are displaying with aggressive, challenging or violent behaviours to try and de-escalate the satiation. Using verbal techniques and redirection to prevent anyone coming to harm, and physical restraint as a last resort
  • Engaging with other members of the MDT to ensure a good continuity of care across the board
  • Liaising with the senior nursing team and patients consultants to flag any concerns regarding the patients physical or mental wellbeing
  • Attending ward rounds when required, keeping up to date with ward round plans and assisting the nursing team in ensuring the plan is carried out in full
  • Performing basic physical health checks (ie physical observations, blood sugar, BMI, urinalysis, UDS etc) and escalating concerns accordingly
  • Undertaking observation rounds to maintain safety on the ward
  • Monitoring patients on 1:1 and 2:1 staffing ratio when the patients is presenting as a high risk to themselves or others
  • Keeping clear and accurate notes on my interactions with patients, and on any mood changes, activity, general behaviour of each patient and any other relevant information
  • Working in line with Trust policies and procedures and in line any care plans in place for each patient

I progressed to a team leader position within my 1st year working at the company. In this role I have been working as a Team Leader in a residential care home in London, before transferring to work at a nursing home in Liverpool, specialising in dementia and complex/mental health needs. I am eager to help people and find ways to solve any problem a person might have These skills have been developed in my previous jobs where I have plenty of experience of customer facing work, and working with clients in care with various communication barriers that need to be overcome in order to ascertain and meet their needs This is also evidenced in my other job roles in heath and social care, where I have been required to communicate daily with other members of a multi disciplinary team, care home residents/hospital patients and their families to ensure good continuity of care for the clients
