Biggar High School — Volunteer | [May, 2024] – [May, 2025]
(1 Year)
Over the course of a year, I volunteered at my local high school to help establish and run community-based sports clubs, focusing on volleyball, basketball, and badminton. This role involved planning and coordinating weekly sessions that encouraged participation from students, parents, and members of the wider community. My responsibilities included setting up equipment, managing sign-ups, promoting the clubs through school and community channels, and ensuring all sessions ran smoothly and safely.
Through this experience, I developed strong leadership and organizational skills, as I was often responsible for creating session plans, communicating with school staff and community members, and ensuring all age groups and skill levels felt welcome and engaged. I also gained hands-on experience in teamwork, time management, and conflict resolution — especially when adapting sessions to meet the diverse needs of participants.
This volunteer role deepened my passion for sport and highlighted the importance of accessible physical activity for all. It also gave me valuable insight into community engagement and how sport can be used as a tool to bring people together, promote healthy lifestyles, and build confidence in individuals.
As a result of my commitment and contribution to the school and local community, I was proud to receive an SQA Award recognizing my voluntary service and leadership in sport. This achievement reflects the impact of my efforts and further motivates me to continue making a difference through sport and community involvement.
I hold a strong academic background and will soon commence a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Glasgow. Beyond my academic pursuits, I am actively engaged in football, golf, and regular gym training—activities that have developed my discipline, teamwork, and strategic thinking. I also have a keen interest in video games, which have enhanced my problem-solving abilities, cognitive flexibility, and decision-making under pressure. These interests contribute to a well-rounded and resilient approach to both academic challenges and the demands of a professional environment.
