SHEQ Advisor

Mgroup Telecom
11.2024 - 08.2025
  • My role as a SHEQ Advisor for the connections department within MGroup means that I am responsible for ensuring safety, health, environmental, and quality standards are met within the company's telecoms projects.
  • This involves providing guidance, conducting audits and inspections, and promoting a positive SHEQ culture.
  • The role also requires me to induct new recruits when they join the company, and give them a detailed understanding of the safety culture will expect them to uphold when they go into the field to become lone working operatives.
  • To enable me to conduct this roll it is essential to have strong communication skills, a proactive approach, and a thorough understanding of relevant regulations and standards.
  • I am also responsible for investigating any incidents thoroughly by collating data and evidence in the form of drug / alcohol tests, witness statements and digital evidence relating to the incident.
  • After the investigation is completed I ensure that all actions are being implemented to protect the workforce against injury in the future.

  • Since starting this role I have put together a comprehensive inventory of all tooling/equipment that is owned by the company and utilising a NFC tagging system I have created a traceable line of accountability including metric data that has enabled us to monitor all usage as well as any upcoming service/calibration intervals.
  • I am a qualified PAT technician to City & Guilds level which enables me to carry out all of the PAT testing needs for the company in house.
  • I have an accreditation to perform inspections on all climbing equipment such as harnesses, lanyards, working belts, winches, and tripods.
  • I am also qualified to undertake the testing calibration and repair of the GDU equipment that our engineers use.

  • Other qualification that I hold include confined spaces operative City & Guilds level, IPAF card, PASMA Card, and NRSWA operative card I have also just completed the NEBOSH National General Certificate.

Cabling / Civils Engineer

Lightning Fibre
Eastbourne
08.2022 - 03.2023
  • Having joined Lightning Fibre I have been able to transfer my existing skill set from Openreach and expand them to allow me to progress my career.
  • I now have my full street-works accreditation so that I can carry out my day-to-day tasks as a team leader for the in-house civil engineering team, I have also gained my IPAF License and passed the City & Guilds qualification to allow me to enter confined spaces and carry out rescues of any casualties.
  • These along with my existing accreditations have enabled me to become a hybrid engineer so the cabling team employ my skills when needed.

Openreach FVR Engineer

BT Openreach
10.2017 - 08.2022
  • Openreach FVR Engineer, having completed a NVQ level 2 in telecommunications this year I have also been working with the Fault Volume Reduction team in the south east mainly working on network up-lifts on the copper D-side upgrading to Universal Clip Joints in the UG plant and replacing obsolete DP’s with Tool-less Boxcon 20’s.
  • As part of my roll I am tasked with issuing A55’s to allow work to be completed i.e. to organize for a cable length to be changed to allow the joint to be remade, I am also inputting A1024 to raise awareness of plant that may be faulty or obsolete.
  • After working in FVR for two and a half years I was moved over to service delivery (SD), whilst on SD in Hastings over the last two years I have expanded my skill set to include FTTP, scaffold training, frames work, ADSL broadband, and general copper faulting.
  • Having moved over from an area in the business that was mainly heavy equipment to the installation and faulting side of things I found I was able to combine the two areas to allow me to become a more useful engineer as I had knowledge and experience that some other SD engineers were lacking.

Field Supervisor Fibre

KELLY COMUNICATIONS
10.2016 - 10.2017
  • Field Supervisor Fibre: this was a position that evolved providing business premises with fibre optics via a direct UG network pick up from the existing Fibre Node (DP) and routing the underground fiber optic cables directly to the end user.

Field Supervisor Copper

KELLY COMUNICATIONS
09.2014 - 10.2016
  • Field Supervisor Copper: in this job roll I was able to work with a large team in the south and southeast providing both residential and business customers with copper lines from the UG and Arial network.

Trainee Heating Engineer

A & M ENERGY SOLOUTIONS
09.2013 - 09.2014
  • I moved to this company from Swale heating for a number of reasons the main one being that I wanted more job security and being self-employed was not offering me the security that I wanted.
  • The work was very similar but rather than mostly council contracts we were working for the energy companies themselves and installing more energy efficient condensing boilers this has given me the opportunity to work on some very strange central heating systems indeed as they were mostly private houses that we were working in and they had not been kept up to the current standards, unlike the council run properties that I had been use to, there were also a number of DIY installations that had been completed by the home owners themselves which were not only in effective but In some cases quite dangerous.

Trainee Heating Engineer

SWALE HEATING
02.2010 - 09.2013
  • I started to work under the supervision of Mr. Ian Edworthy as a subcontractor for Swale Heating he has taken me on as his apprentice and as such I have been involved in the installation of a wide variety of different types of heating systems including heat only boilers, combination systems, cylinder changes, and re-piping complete systems.
  • During my time with Mr. Edworthy, I have gained lots of valuable knowledge that has allowed me to go from watching and feeding him tools and equipment to actually carrying out tasks on my own to a high standard.
  • With the training that I have had so far I am able to look at systems and identify the correct layout and type of system and also work out the most simple and time effective way of replacing the sections that are no longer required.
  • One of the other benefits of working for someone that has such experience is that you also learn how to work with the public in a way that will allow them to carry on with their daily routine with the least amount of inconvenience I have found that this leads to a better work environment and at the end of the day a happier customer.
