I am a hard working and passionate nurse having been registered in the UK for 5 years. During that time I have held permanent positions in the Derby Royal Hospital's day case elective orthopedic ward, the spinal orthopedic ward, and my current role as registered a nurse/endoscopy practitioner. As well as these permanent roles I have worked in numerous departments in the Royal Derby Hospital working with the hospital's nurse bank. This bredth of experience has given me the practical and theoretical background to work in a variety of departments and quickly adapt to subtle differences in procedure and protocol in different work places.

Nurse

I attained my UK nurse registration in 2018 and my first nursing job in the UK was at the Royal Derby hospitals in one of the elective /daycase orthopaedic wards. Here are my responsibilities:

  • Admitting patients , making sure to follow the safety guidelines for patients having surgery.
  • Established positive rapport with patients through listening and compassionate care.
  • Assisted with routine medical tests and evaluations, documenting findings to aid care planning.
  • Assisted patients with healing and recovery after surgery.
  • Administered medication in line with stringent drug regulations.
  • Liaised with senior physicians to plan timely, successful patient discharges.
  • Supported patients with critical conditions, planning and implementing targeted strategies for optimal recovery outcomes.
  • Maintained accurate, up-to-date patient records, maximising data accuracy.
  • Prioritised health problems to assist patients in complex, urgent or emergency situations.

In March 2020, I had my maternity leave. I came back to work at the very end of December 2020, our daycase/elective ward was closed due to the Covid19 pandemic and I was allocated to the spinal ward. In addition to the above , my responsibilities were as follows:

  • Used outstanding planning and prioritisation abilities to safely care for 14 patients.
  • Mentored student and junior nurses, building confidence and competence to ensure outstanding patient provisions.
  • Built caring, compassionate relationships with patients, providing emotional support and encouragement during complex surgeries.
  • Worked closely with fellow nurses, doctors and clinicians for consistent communication and continued best care practices.
  • Collected blood samples and prepared them for lab analysis.
  • Assessed and evaluated patient needs, supporting accurate diagnosis and care planning.
  • Administered oxygen and medication to achieve optimum health outcomes.
  • Followed NHS procedures and protocols to safely prepare drips and transfusions.
  • Facilitated efficient ward operations by maintaining stock control, promptly re-ordering low-stock medication and supplies.

After just over a year in the spinal ward, I decided to explore new areas of nursing and the opportunity came for an endoscopy practitioner post in the same trust. I started in the endoscopy department in July 2022 and am currently working in the endoscopy unit. Here are my duties:

  • set up the room ready for procedures.
  • assisting endoscopists with taking biopsies, EBUS-FNA, EUS, bronchoscopy, ERCP.
  • assisting endoscopists with varices surveillance, bowel cancer screening, therapeutic procedures such as variceal banding, hemorrhoids banding, intervention for internal bleeding and retrieval of foreign bodies.
  • looking after patients post procedure.
