I am very passionate when it comes to animals and having the chance to be a volunteer at Pets' Corner has helped me with that. I love working with animals from providing them with basic husbandry, to creating enrichment for them. I enjoy being part of a team when completing tasks as well as having the confidence to do things by myself, no matter what the task is I am very conscientious and I always ensure they are completed to a good standard before moving on to the next one. I appreciate that protocols and regulations must be adhered to, to ensure the health and well-being of both the animals and public. I put my heart and soul into making sure I can be the best I can be, learning as much as I can to help increase my knowledge and asking questions where needed. Using my communication skills, I am able to pass any information I have learnt onto other people such as volunteers, work experience or students. I really enjoy being able to teach new members of the team different things whilst getting to know them at the same time. I pride myself on my punctuality and I am always keen to take on any new tasks during the day ahead. I have in the past worked alongside staff members to help educate and supervise students whilst they undertake a recognised qualification at Pets' Corner. I feel I have empathy and patience and enjoy a good relationship with the majority of the students. I also feel I have the personality and caring attitude to work with many of the less advantaged and SEN visitors that attend Pets' Corner on a regular basis. I have expanded on my understanding of the teaching we offer at Pets' Corner and are awaiting my results of my PTTLS course. I understand the importance of accurate record keeping as this helps communicate issues to other staff and is necessary for the zoo licence. By keeping accurate records it can help myself and other staff recognise recurring, serious and notifiable diseases or illnesses within the collection and I also have an understand of policies and procedures regarding them. I have a good working knowledge of Microsoft, outlook, office and Excel and all of these can be used to help with record keeping going forward. I am approachable and professional and feel confident in dealing with external contractors ensuring that work is carried out correctly. I have been entrusted to open and close Pets' Corner insuring the site is safe and secure. I also understand the importance of not sharing sensitive information such as codes with everyone. Alongside this trust I also had experience of cash handling such as dealing with donations, proving I can be trusted. I am able to convey information at all levels in order for everyone to stay up to date and I am able to answer any questions for clarification. I am very productive when it comes to work, making sure I get the most out of my days by completing tasks effectively as well as efficiently. This then enables me to further my knowledge by doing new tasks I might not have done before and working with new people along side me to get the job done if necessary. As a member of staff I am responsible for my own and others health and safety. Knowing council policies and procedures will help me to make pets corner a safe and healthy work environment for both myself, other staff and visitors. I am flexible with my working hours allowing me to be available for team meetings and staff cover. I like to accept new challenges and feel that I would like to get involved in any aspects to improve Pets' Corner going forward.
My most recent and current job is working at Pets' Corner in Harlow as as Animal Carer & Education Officer. Where I have put to use my qualification from college and increased my learning along the way. I have been able to to also teach young people about all things animal care. This is where I am able to use what I have learnt to teach other people. I enjoy this part of my job and am awaiting my results of my PTTLS course that I have done. I also still work with the animals, ensuring they are well looked after and have lots of enrichment and activities to keep them occupied.
I had worked as a volunteer for several years, providing necessary husbandry care for both domestic and exotic animals. I have had experience helping with educational parties for children, showing the animals and explaining what they are and all their requirements. I answered questions that parents, or children may have had, Improving my communication skills and customer service abilities. I also helped in fun days, interacting with people and giving advice on handling enabling me to improve my leadership skills.
