In this role I have effectively provided line management to student midwives, and taken measures to maintain and develop supportive inclusive learning environments for all.

My responsibilities include:-

  • Mapping of placements according to each Approved Education Institution's (AEI's) programme.
  • Building effective supportive working relationships with students including pastoral care through Clinical Restorative Supervision.
  • Production of inclusive and individualised learning plans for students, and proactively seeking support from the wider Trust education team e.g. Neurodiversity Network.
  • Strengthening Trust compliance towards NHS Safe Learning Environment Charter (SLEC) e.g. Revitalising the Placement Induction lesson plan and supporting materials.
  • Facilitation of mandatory training for Practice Supervisors and Assessors.
  • Implementing learning from ongoing Post Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) into Trust education materials.

I joined the University having held a sessional lecturer post for a number of years. My time with University was complex since it coincided with high scrutiny within maternity as a whole, and midwifery education. My role included:-

  • Recruitment and open events promoting the University and course to prospective applicants.
  • Interviewing and selection of prospective students.
  • Post graduate teaching at Level 7 with the Professional Midwife Nurse Advocate course.

  • Fostering excellent working relationship with Practice Local Partners (PLP) on the "link lecturer" role.

Patient Safety Midwife

During this role I was responsible for overseeing the clinical incidents arising in Maternity. My duties included:-

  • Production of 72 hour reports and presentation of findings to Director of Midwifery and Chief Midwife and Nursing Officer, and representing the Trust at Care Commissioning Groups Serious Incident review meetings.
  • Root Cause and Analysis investigation and report writing.
  • Reporting incidents and supporting families with Maternity & Neonatal Safety Investigations (formerly HSIB).
  • Reporting to MBRACE.
  • Escalation and de-escalation of clinical incidents pending on investigation findings.
  • Established a compassionate governance approach.
  • Exception reporting of themes and trends within maternity incidents.
  • Support of staff and families experiencing investigation.

Midwife Led Unit Manager

I have coordinated a midwifery led unit and took accountability for the efficient and safe operational management of this area. This role included the out of hours participation in the on-call management roster for out of hours issues for the Trust. I am responsible for all human resources matters including disciplinary investigations.

Key Achievements

  • Researching and writing a new evidenced based guideline. I supported midwives to confidently change their practice.
  • Re-organising the pathway for complex pregnancies and families choosing out of guideline care. This included devising bespoke care plans which multi-agency teams are confident to deliver.
  • Collaborating with the “Maternal Voice Partnership” on the production of new service user information.
  • Involvement with research and data gathering for the UK Midwifery Study System.
  • Filmed performing and explaining the newborn infant physical examination for the Trust ‘MOMA app’ an information service for families.
  • Consistently performed over 100 examinations a year and provided mentorship to colleagues undertaking the postgraduate examination of the newborn course.
  • Delivering multidisciplinary training on Trust education days in obstetric emergency simulation, debrief, and human factors.

  • Using audit to improve practice standards of intermittent auscultation.
  • Composing SMART based performance reviews and supporting the clinical development of team members.
  • Producing a statement of case which was upheld by the Nursing & Midwifery Council.

  • Awarded 100% for Health and Safety audits.
