Having many happy memories of being born in South Africa, its indoor/outdoor way of living, large open properties, high ceilings and colonial architecture are something to be treasured. I didn’t realise just how much until we moved to one of the worst council estates in Bolton in the late 90’s. I believe this vast culture shock ignited a sensitivity within me to my surroundings.
It wasn’t until my 20s that I discovered this would be such a huge advantage as an Interior Designer. I was lucky enough to be able to quit my job as an estate agent and dive headfirst back into the creative world, gaining a degree in Interior Architecture, whilst also taking on small interior design projects to feed my thirst for practical experience.
The day after I handed in my final project, I started filming the BBC/Netflix TV show “Interior Design Masters” which was one of the best experiences of my life, although a total baptism of fire. The show is still available on Netflix.
This willingness to constantly through myself in at the deep end has shown me that our only limitation is our imagination, identifying problems and using creative thinking to solve these problems through design really does set me apart from others.
Interior Architecture and Design course provides you with the skills to transform or give new life to spaces, as well as teaching you how to plan and design creative interiors.
You will look at hierarchies and relationships between different spaces, describing these relationships in new ways. This industry-aligned degree course offers you the opportunity to study and practise the adaption and re-use of space within new and existing building stock, while also addressing aesthetics, human needs, materiality and more, as well as the ephemeral qualities of atmosphere, character, colour, light and shade.
Alongside the regeneration of existing space, you will discover new interior environments, in a broad range of industry sectors, such as hospitality, retail, leisure and residential, using an experimental approach to design to develop the refined techniques required for effective space planning, conceptual design, development, visualisation and the refurbishment of space.
The creative pathways are delivered by a team of specialists in each area.
All students will take drawing classes which continue through the first half of the course. Drawing is seen to underpin all aspects of visual education. There is a contextual element with a series of delivered lectures designed to expand your understanding of art, culture and society.
The course has a close working relationship with the nationally recognised New Art Gallery in Walsall, and opportunities are available for students to share their thoughts with gallery staff. Students also have the opportunity to take part in events based at the gallery.
All students will have access to their own studio space, and an excellent range of facilities and workshops.
You will receive guidance and support in selecting and preparing a professional portfolio of work ready for future interviews.
The pre-degree Foundation is the traditional route to a degree.
