I am American/British, raised in the state of Missouri, USA where I attended the University of Missouri. United Airlines brought me to London in 1991. I lived in Chicago, London, Paris and San Francisco and spent a lot of time in Hong Kong where my now husband worked for several years. Fortunately, I was able to stay home raising 3 children who are now mostly independent.
Prior to my main airline career, I had jobs in service, one being Phonemail, where I raised funds at university for the College of Arts and Science and jobs in restaurant service.
Volunteering opportunities have included:
- Wildlife Rescue in St Louis, Missouri cleaning cages and feeding rescued wildlife.
- Powder Valley, a conservation nature centre in St Louis, housing native Missouri reptiles and other wildlife for education and viewing. There I cleaned cages, handled and fed them.
- Assisting on an archaeological dig in Missouri looking for artifacts of a Native American tribe who'd settled there long ago.
-Delivering donated clothing and visiting orphanages in Bolivia, run by American Airline's American Ambassador's program.
- Helping in native-to-Missouri plant garden to help the bee population and increase awareness of native plants, as well as the Circle of Concern Food Pantry, a vegetable garden charity projects.
- Having helped to feed homeless/low income London residents at St Andrews Fulham Fields.
- Caring for a high-risk elderly neighbour for 18 months, shopping for her and keeping her company. Then with her unfortunate late-stage cancer diagnosis, I filled in between her assigned carers' hours, cooking light meals and keeping her comfortable.
-Blood donation consistently for 25+ years.
I think this line of work would be ideal for me as I am passionate about personal connections and believe community is so important for mental health.
The highlights of the flight attendant position and this company were not just the exciting destinations, but working with and for, people from many different cultures. This job was not just transporting passengers from A to B, but doing it safely, as friendly professionals. We kept them entertained while providing overall comfort, which ultimately brought them back to us.
A flight attendant's duties involved:
I found this job to be entirely fulfilling, as it allowed me to experience living in big cities, including Chicago, London and Paris, where I soaked up the culture and met remarkable people. The full-on customer service required was great experience in connecting and understanding people at a deeper level, listening and empathising consistently. I was afforded numerous free days of which I took advantage , traveling to see family, friends and unfamiliar countries. Flexibility was a must and a way of life.
