Work History

Social work student - PLACEMENT 2

Derbyshire Healthcare Foundation Trust
Derby, Derbyshire
03.2025 - Current

As a social work student on placement with the Derby City Recovery Team at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, I am actively engaging in a comprehensive learning experience across various Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) teams. This hands-on involvement is enhancing my practical skills and deepening my understanding of mental health interventions for young people.

  • Shadowing CAMHS Liaison Team:

I am observing the CAMHS Liaison Team as they assess young individuals under 18 in hospital settings, particularly those presenting in mental health crises, with self-harm incidents, or suicidal thoughts. This experience is providing me with insights into conducting mental health assessments and coordinating safe discharges. Additionally, I am learning about the importance of timely follow-ups and the process of integrating young people into appropriate support services.

  • Engaging with the CAMHS Crisis and Home Treatment Team:

I am participating with the CAMHS Crisis and Home Treatment Team, which offers urgent community assessments and interventions for young individuals experiencing mental health crises. This exposure is allowing me to understand the dynamics of crisis intervention and the implementation of home treatment plans aimed at stabilizing and supporting young people within their community environments.

  • Collaborating with Core CAMHS Team:

I am working alongside the Core CAMHS Team, gaining experience in delivering a range of therapeutic interventions for children and adolescents with significant mental health issues. This collaboration is enhancing my skills in comprehensive assessments and tailored care planning, ensuring that the needs of young clients and their families are met effectively.

  • Observing Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Teams:

I am observing sessions conducted by DBT and CBT teams, focusing on evidence-based therapeutic approaches for treating various mental health conditions in young people. This observation is enriching my understanding of structured therapy models and their practical applications in promoting emotional regulation and cognitive restructuring among clients.

  • Utilising therapeutic techniques to help clients cope with stress and mental health issues.
  • Established rapport with clients by understanding and respecting their personal situations.

Through these diverse shadowing opportunities, I am actively developing a holistic perspective on child and adolescent mental health services, refining my clinical competencies, and preparing for a professional career dedicated to supporting mental well-being of young individuals.
