I started my journey with Houghton Regis Primary School by volunteering for 2 days a week which was closely followed by being employed part time as a 1:1 with a year 1 child with ADHD, global delay and Autism.

My duties were;

  • Working with the class teacher to provide the child with the necessary activities to help development.
  • To support the child during their school day in all areas.
  • To help transition the child into another school.
  • Adapting the work to meet their needs.
  • Assisted in the development of IEPs for better student outcomes.
  • Ensuring they had brain breaks.
  • Collaborated closely with teachers to develop personalised learning plans for students.
  • Observed student behaviours and reported observations to relevant staff aiding early intervention efforts.


This led to being a full time Teaching Assistant within KS1. My duties included;

  • Working alongside the class teacher and other members of staff to support their daily duties / expectations.
  • Forming relationships with children and their parents/carers which significantly improved my communication skills.
  • Carrying out interventions, these were identified by myself and members of staff that I worked with, I would need to regularly use my initiative to adapt learning or create scaffold resources to support pupil progress towards an objective.
  • Leading small groups, this also includes timetabling / scheduling of specific activities as well as other members of staff.
  • Being in charge of my own phonics group - planning and preparing resources, monitoring progress and recording necessary data on our school's assessment system.

This was then advanced to become a more specialised first aider within the school in order for me to be a named person for a child with diabetes, as well as being trained and signed off with a child with a feeding tube. I also have regular safeguarding training and always ensure all policies are followed, this has also covered key information / training points for PREVENT, FGM and GDPR.
